Born a slave, he would record "The Laughing Song" ([[1891]]), probably the biggest selling [[phonograph cylinder|cylinder]] in the early era of recorded music. Due to the limits of early recording, he re-recorded the song numerous times for production. There were rumors he was executed for murdering his wife, but no evidence was ever found to prove this. Only one other song he recorded, "The Whistling Coon", would become popular. |
