The European Federation for Transport and Environment, commonly referred to as Transport & Environment (T&E), is a European umbrella for non-governmental organisations working in the field of transport and the environment, promoting sustainable transport in Europe; which means an approach to transport that is environmentally responsible, economically sound and socially just.
The European Federation for Transport and Environment, commonly referred to as Transport & Environment (T&E), is a European umbrella for non-governmental organisations working in the field of transport and the environment, promoting sustainable transport in Europe.

History
T&E was created in 1990 with the realisation that many political decisions that influence the environmental damage caused by transport - both positively and negatively - are taken at a European level. These involve getting transport prices right, vehicle emission limits, fuel quality standards, taxes, funding of infrastructure, safety requirements, air quality standards, deregulation and liberalization and more.

Mission
Transport & Environment’s mission is to promote, at EU and global level, a transport policy based on the principles of sustainable development. Transport policy should minimise harmful impacts on the environment and health, maximise efficiency of resources, including energy and land, and guarantee safety and sufficient access for all.
Critical remarks:

T&E studies on the subject of transport highlight the advantages of e-mobility. The authors sometimes lack objectivity, as three examples show:

Quote 1: "Taking into account recycling, the battery of an electric car consumes up to 30 kilograms of raw materials, while a conventional car burns an average of 17,000 liters of gasoline." This comparison is misleading, because the electric car currently powered by a mix of electricity also consumes large amounts of raw materials, e.g. coal or gas that is converted into electricity.

Quote 2: "Furthermore, only a small tax is levied on fuels in Germany, whereas the tax on electricity is very high." In fact, the tax for gasoline is about three times higher than for electricity https://www.adac.de/verkehr/tanken-kraftstoff-antrieb/tipps-zum-tanken/7-fragen-zum-benzinpreis/

Quote 3: "Gas trucks are not clean and often even dirtier than diesel vehicles." Stefan Siegemund, Head of Renewable Energies and Mobility at dena, contradicts this statement. The emission of nitrogen oxides and fine dust is lower than with diesel with the Euro standard 6. "With an argument based on relative values and selectively selected measurement data, T&E knits an argumentation structure against the currently available, technically fully developed drive alternative LNG", summarizes Kehler. https://www.jitpay.eu/2019/11/19/zukunft-erdgas-kritisiert-te-studie/

Mind the Gap
Issued every year, this report examines the difference between the official laboratory test results and real-world CO2 emissions and fuel economy of cars. The difference between official laboratory test results and real-world car performance is jumping from 9% in 2001 to 28% in 2012 and 42% in 2015. It is expected to reach 50% before 2020. One of the sources for real-world fuel consumption values used in this study is the data set provided by Spritmonitor.

The European Federation for Transport and Environment, commonly referred to as Transport & Environment (T&E), is a European umbrella for non-governmental organisations working in the field of transport and the environment, promoting sustainable transport in Europe.

Transport & Environment has often worked with other environmental lobby groups such as Greenpeace,[1][2][3] where many of its staff members have previously worked.[4][5][6][7]

Main campaign areas

Members

T&E is currently supported by 73 organisations (63 members and 10 supporters) in 24 countries.[22]

Funding

Transport & Environment receives funding from: European Climate Foundation, The Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation, Climate Imperative Foundation, the European Commission, ClimateWorks Foundation, Schwab Charitable Fund, Oak Foundation and a number of other institutions and organisations.[23]
