'''Makiki''' is an urban residential inner city district of [[Honolulu, Hawaii|Honolulu, Hawai‘i]] located east of [[downtown Honolulu]] generally stretching east to west from Punahou Street to Pensacola Street and North to south from Neahoa Road to Lunalilo Home Road. [[Punchbowl Crater|Punchbowl]] which is an extinct shield volcano and [[Tantalus (Oahu)|Tantalus]], tower over the Makiki neighborhood. The geographic layout of this area is primarily comprised of older houses, smaller apartment buildings, and side streets. Major roadways include Pensacola Street, Pi'ikoi Street, Neahoa Road, and Wilder Avenue. The area also includes a fire station, public school system, market place, and park (Makiki park being the only park in the immediate [[Honolulu]] area to host a skate park). Although specific demographic statistics are uncertain, residents of Makiki are primarily [[Micronesian and Hawaiian]]. The average household income ranges between $5,000-$25,000 making the area home to many low income and working class individuals and families. The crime rate in Makiki is fairly average for an inner city suburb in comparison to other inner city suburbs of [[Honolulu]]. The lower sections of Makiki are also known to be home to many rising skyscrapers. These skyscrapers are becoming home to rich people over looking the ocean. The over all crime rate of [[Honolulu]] is much lower than other major [[U.S.]] cities. |
