updation state president TAMILNADU G.SRINIVASAN NATIONAL PEOPLES PARTY FROM JUNE 21ST 2023 120.60.117.218 (talk) 05:12, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
I would like to add a few points to the entry for John McCain. This record is "semi-protected" and I would like access so I can add a few entries with references.
::Can you provide a published reliable source for the specific change you want to make? Cullen328 (talk) 05:18, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
:Hi IP user, I just wanted to point out that you should avoid typing in all caps as this can be perceived as yelling by other editors. <span style="color:purple">Coco</span><span style="color:green">bb8</span> (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 19:34, 22 May 2024 (UTC)

Newcomer task
It appears that the “so called” Newcomer task is already a disaster in progress. Despite being a regular editor I had not heard of it until 17 May 2024, when I noticed a piece of text in Highway 1 (Queensland) had been removed and replaced with identical text, and with no explanation other than “Newcomer task” on 16 May 2024.
FMook (talk) 00:12, 8 October 2008 (UTC).

I asked the question “How can the removal of information be described as a newcomer task?”. I have since been accused of making an unreferenced removal. How can this occur, and just what is a “Newcomer task”?
:You already have access, actually. Autoconfirmed users can edit semi-protected pages. Someguy1221 (talk) 00:19, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

When this is sorted out please tak a look at Abernethy Road, where I asked a similar question and have not received any response. Downsize43 (talk) 05:16, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
::Actually, it looks like FMook is 1 edit away from being autoconfirmed. So, they could make an edit elsewhere, become autoconfirmed, and then make the desired edits, or they can post on Talk:John McCain, explaining what edits they want made, and can get consensus on them. Confusing Manifestation<small>(Say hi!)</small> 05:05, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

:Downsize43 Those "Newcomer task" tags link to this page which should explain more thoroughly than I will be able to do here. Essentially, they are edits by new editors made to pages tagged as needing cleanup. It isn't an endorsement of the edit in any way, it is just intended to flag that the editor is new and was brought to that article rather than finding it on their own. Tollens (talk) 05:21, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
Linking images from Wikimedia
::I'll additionally note that the edit of 15 May on Abernethy Road didn't remove text and then replace it with identical text, it instead added two citations. Tollens (talk) 05:24, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
:::Also on Highway 1 (Queensland), you may have been looking at the wrong diff. The edit flagged as a newcomer task did not remove any information – the edit removing information was another editor undoing the previous "newcomer task" edit because it was unsourced. Tollens (talk) 05:26, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
::::Hello, Downsize43. My first observation is that newcomers often make mistakes, and that is not surprising. I suggest that you read Wikipedia:Growth Team features which explains newcomer tasks in great detail. If you still have concerns, then Wikipedia talk:Growth Team features is probably the best place to discuss them. Cullen328 (talk) 05:30, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
:::::Finally found something on Archive 1. Hardly the best place for it. Urgently need to get it "out there" somewhere and let the world know. Downsize43 (talk) 06:41, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
::::::Downsize43 Both your descriptions of what happened in the newcomer task are incorrect so I wonder whether you know how diffs work. In the page history , click the "prev" link in the line tagged with "Newcomer task" to get . The left-hand side is before the edit and the right-hand side is after. The edit added this text: <code>The highway is part of the famous "Big Lap" on National Route 1</code>. A Google search shows it's correct but it was unsourced and maybe not important enough for the lead so somebody reverted it in this edit. This time "Newcomer task" is on the left side which is before the edit so the removal is not itself the newcomer task. See more at Help:Diff. PrimeHunter (talk) 09:23, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
:::::::PrimeHunter Whichever way you look at it the fact remains that the replacement of the previously removed text has no reference, therefore it is entitled to be questioned or removed. I was merely questioning why there was no reference for the added “fact”. Downsize43 (talk) 07:22, 23 May 2024 (UTC)

Update New Description for Company Profile
Hi,

Where do we stand on galleries of images in articles? There's a user working through Shakespeare's plays adding gallery sections and I don't want to interact with him/her on the subject until I know if there's a policy issue. If you meant User Page, which is a page that tells other editors about your activities on Wikipedia, then personal photos are not necessary. Hello, I am great-nephew to Mabel Normand and I have been promoting my great aunt Mabel’s career and life for 50yrs of my 75. The biography which appears in Wikipedia mention the same old hash. I have had her first biography published in FILMS IN REVIEW Sept 1974. I have given interviews about her life & career and also give talks and know a considerable amount of information from the family point of view and our own resources which haven’t seen light of day. I would like to write something about my great aunt which comes from my knowledge of those facts. In the present biography in Wikipedia things are mentioned like the Broadway Musical Mack & Mabel to which I contributed to the Librettist, The Stevie Nix song MabelNormand but my public protest is not indicated. Can you tell me how I can legitimately have a say in this biography. It is not entirely accurate nor does it give a fair look at Mabel’s contribution as an early pioneer of motion pictures. Instead it sadly dwells on the negative incidents and not enough on her positive contributions or her private personal happiness events of life nor her deep convictions for fairness in life for the poor. There is no mention of her charitable acts to support orphans and her deeply held religious convictions. These are facts of her life which are as important as the same old rehash. Also Mabel was christened Mabel not Ambel and her father was Claude not Clod. Where do people get this nonsense from? I would like to write the story as according to the facts we her family have. Personally I deeply offended at having to endure any longer this bullying scandal invented in Hollywood Babylon after her death. As her blood relative I have every right to have my say and I would be grateful for your help and advice.
:Or; you can go to Special:Preferences and look at "Member of groups"; it will show if you are in the Autoconfirmed users group. --—<i><b>—&nbsp;<font color = "gray">Gadget850&nbsp;(Ed)</font><font color = "darkblue">&nbsp;talk</font></b> - </i> 19:36, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
The biography in Wikipedia as it stands is not fully factual and has become more fantasised each time it is edited. Who is the person editing it now. At one point I had through Wikipedia the choice to review what was written or contributed by the writer of the time about 5 years ago. What has happened to being able to contact the editor directly. As a living relative I would like to be included in the mini bio as I have seen in other bio’s.
with thanks for your help and understanding in this matter
Yours sincerely
Stephen Normand

Article Review
Hello! We're a little confused about donating copyrighted information. We at Bryn Mawr College hold the copyright to information on our Special Collections website, and we are trying to add some of this content to Wikipedia, but it is repeatedly being flagged for deletion/blanked because we don't say on the website that we are releasing it under GFDL. We ARE, however, releasing it under GFDL and have said so on all of the talk pages (not that I'm saying these pages are wrongfully blanked - we fully understand the need to verify this information). We have also left note of our email address, which is the one posted on the bottom of all of our library pages, on the talk pages. Is that not an okay first step? We've read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Donating_copyrighted_materials, which says:

How to receive an article review? How long of a wait is normal wait time? Article is in "draft" ready to be published draft:Nerijus Glezekas.
If you want to grant Wikipedia permission to use material from your site, but don't want to place a statement to that effect on your site, you can leave us a notice to that effect on the article's talk page (or on your user page if your site covers a number of topics). This does require that your site have a posted email contact, or some other similar means for us to verify that we really do have the relevant permission. Someone from Wikipedia will then contact that email address to confirm the permission, and we will be able to add your site to a list of those from which our editors may freely draw.

Is that not true? Will that not happen? Thanks! Bmcspecial (talk) 17:26, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

Since the WP:COMMONNAME of Chinese train stations is now the pinyin of the cardinal direction rather than the cardinal direction (e.g. "Hangzhoudong Railway Station" instead of "Hangzhou East railway station", "Shanghainan Railway Station" instead of "Shanghai South railway station"), I would like to move all the articles of train stations across China as such. :Félix An, maybe I was sleepy, but it took me some time to work out what you were saying. There ia an article here on Fjolla that I was going to transwiki to Wiktionary, but the word already exists there, but without this meaning (see wikt:Fjolla). I would think it needs to be merged with that entry because it is non-encyclopedic in nature to stand, being simply a definition of the word, as an article here. My problem is what to do. It does not qualify, from what I gather, for tagging Copy to Wiktionary because the words exists there already. Does it need to be AFD'd, and then appended to wiktionary once deleted, or is there some other method other than the copy tag that will expedite this? --<small><span style="border:1px solid black;padding:1px;"><font style="color:#fef;background:darkblue;">Javier</font><font style="color:darkblue;background:white;">MC</font></span></small> 06:12, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

:I don't think that it needs to be transwikied to Wikt. The WP Fjolla article is about the name, whereas the Wikt definition is for other uses of the word. The WP article can certainly stand on its own - we have many articles about first names - John (first name) for example, that also have definitions on Wikt - John. I am working on my first article/page in a "sandbox", my user page, as suggested. Three questions:
::You are amazing, thank you so much! Zanahary (talk) 03:00, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
:1. Citing sources: I am pulling information from fact sheets, overviews, and annual reports supplied by the user group, the subject of my article. Do I cite those as sources or is it not necessary or do I just cite the user group address and user group website?
:2. How do I move the content from my user page to Wikipedia once I am ready? Start a page and copy and paste?
:3. If the article is accepted by Wikipedia, when and how will I be able to upload and display a logo for the user group?
Thank you. <small><span class="autosigned">—Preceding unsigned comment added by CarinJohns (talk • contribs) 15:30, 9 October 2008 (UTC)</span></small><!-- Template:Unsigned --> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->

: Sorry to just dump some homework on you but take a look at Wikipedia:Your first article, WP:CORP and WP:FAQ/Business and WP:RS. In order to upload an image your account needs to be 4 days old with 10 edits. <b><font STYLE="verdana" COLOR ="#990000">Gtstricky</font>Talk or C</b> 16:15, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

::To be more specific to answer these questions:
:1. You want to be as specific as possible when citing a source. You want someone to be able to find the exact page you are looking at if they were to check. If you only cite the website in question, it may not be easy or intuitive to find the source. If you are looking at a webpage, cite the exact URL of the page that ties to that "fact", and if you are reading a book, you should cite the page number and edition (ISBN) so someone could find it if they wanted to. WP:CITE and WP:CITET are good references for how to handle this.
:2. Once you are "autoconfirmed" (4 days and 10 edits on your account) you will have a series of new tabs appear at the top of your screen. One is named "move". You simply use that tab, which will open an easy to use dialog where you move the article to the new name. Its pretty easy, but if you have trouble or are unsure of how to use it, ask an experienced user (I can do it) to help out or show you how it works.
:3. Likewise, once you are autoconfirmed (4 days and 10 edits) you will get a new option on the LEFT side of your screen, in the "toolbox" section that says "upload file". There is an upload wizard that will walk you through the process. Before you upload, you should DEFINATELY read WP:IMAGE and WP:IUP for information on image liscencing and Wikipedia. Its complicated, and make certain you understand how to correctly tag and describe any images you upload.
:4. I know you didn't ask a question #4, but I thought it prudent to answer an implicit question you may not know you had. With regard to "acceptable" articles at Wikipedia, you should read and understand the concept of notability at Wikipedia. In your article, you need to establish that the group/person/company/whatever has been recognized as notable by the world at large outside of Wikipedia. In order to do that, your article should cite extensive coverage of the subject in independent sources (those unconnected to the subject itself). If no one outside of Wikipedia and the subject has written about it, then it shouldn't have an article on Wikipedia. Be certain your article is able to meet that basic requirement.
:Good luck, and let us know if you need more help! --Jayron32.<small>talk</small>.<small>contribs</small> 17:55, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

:In order to upload a picture, you need to first be "autoconfirmed". That requires that you have 4 days experience and a minimum of 10 edits. Once you are autoconfirmed, there will be a whole bunch of new tools you will have access to, including the option to upload files. On the left side of the screen, under the "toolbox" header will be a link that says "Upload file". From there, a series of "wizards" can help you through the technical aspects of uploading files. Also, before you upload ANYTHING, you should read and understand Wikipedia's rather strict policies on the proper use and liscencing of images. Such information can be found at WP:IMAGE and WP:IUP. This is perhaps one of the most complicated and stringent parts of Wikipedia, so be certain you understand how to correctly tag and label your images when they are uploaded; improperly labeled and/or used images can present legal complications for the Wikimedia Foundation (wikipedia's parent compnay) and they need to be strict that intellectual property laws are followed to the letter. Hi there, I want to write an article about Komatsu's surface mining excavators, however, am unsure what to name the article title. The model series starts from PC2000 and goes to PC8000. Why can't I name it Komatsu PC-series excavators? Because all of their other models use the PC prefix, except for their surface mining excavators all models are numbers in the thousands. Any suggestions? Best, X750. Spin a yarn? <small>Articles I've screwed over?</small> 05:58, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
For my 1st attempt I really want to make a page for my band, but have a few reservations. We are a fairly well known underground band here in my city, but as New Zealand isnt a massive place we are not going to be known outside of it (aside from Myspace). My concern is that I would be wasting my time, that I would make a page for my band and it would get deleted as we are not famous and cannot site lots of sources proving we are real etc (though we do have a myspace page). I wanted to put a few wee pictures up and maybe a song for people to listen to and download if they like us, a way of getting used to using a Wiki and making a page for my band at the same time. Should I bother?
:X750 Komatsu just calls them "Surface mining excavators" at https://www.komatsu.com/en/products/excavators/surface-mining-excavators/. "Komatsu surface mining excavators" has no Google hits but I cannot think of a better name when they have many other excavators with PC numbers. :You've already explained that your band is not notable. So, it would be deleted. Having a MySpace page does not indicate notability. Anyone (even pets) can have MySpace pages. Basically, Wikipedia is not for advertising a band. It is an encyclopedia for things that are already notable and do not need to be advertised. -- <font color='#ff0000'>k</font><font color='#cc0033'>a</font><font color='#990066'>i</font><font color='#660099'>n</font><font color='#3300cc'>a</font><font color='#0000ff'>w</font>&trade; 22:19, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

(undent) Bloodbomb asked a question in good faith. While the initial brusque answers are factually correct (it would take a brave man to bet on a new article about a band surviving long against the tender mercies of deletionists, who regard band articles as a food group), a more constructive response would be to tell Bloodbomb that creating new articles on Wikipedia is perhaps the most difficult, high-risk way to get started as an editor. For a new article to survive, especially in the topic area of bands where new articles die faster than replacement troops in the Battle of Stalingrad, the article's creator must have more than a first-timer's knowledge of Wikipedia's rules. The conservative approach is to begin by making small edits to existing articles, study what other editors do to your edits, and learn to look up the various policies and guidelines that the other editors are (or should be) following when they edit something. (I try to help, by adding links in my edit summaries that explain what I do to articles, and why.) Over time, the new editor will learn what survives on Wikipedia and what doesn't, giving him/herself a stronger chance of writing a new article that might survive. Bloodbomb, you should also peruse the featured articles about music. To pick one at random, see Janet Jackson. In particular, see Janet Jackson#Footnotes. Even if some deletionist on Wikipedia had never heard of Janet Jackson, he or she could easily see from the huge number of reliable sources in those footnotes that this Janet Jackson person is clearly notable. If you want to write an article about your band that survives, write your article to the same standard as those other featured articles about music. As even a cursory glance will indicate, a first-time Wikipedia editor is many hours of study away from mastering all the Wikipedia arcana that goes into creating a featured article. Perhaps the single biggest hurdle is learning to find reliable sources and put them into footnotes. See WP:RS, WP:CITE, WP:CITET, and WP:FOOT. You can learn to make footnotes by adding them to articles that need them - and Lord knows Wikipedia has plenty of articles that need them. Another way to learn is to watch the Articles for deletion page. When you see (yet) another band article coming up for deletion debate, often the problem is that the article lacks the kind of sourcing you find in Janet Jackson. See if you can add those sources and rescue the article from deletion. Once you can save a few articles for other bands, you will be much more ready to write your own article with defenses already built in. Good luck, and thanks for asking on the Help desk rather than forging ahead in blind faith as so many others do, to their grief. --Teratornis (talk) 23:21, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
:And of course there is the conflict of interest problem, but I regard that as secondary if you learn how to write featured articles. Only a tiny percentage of Wikipedia's editors know how to write featured articles, so conflicts of interest become much more likely in the average case of someone writing about something they have a personal involvement with. Who would write an article about a band anyway, besides members of the group, or their fans? If only disinterested parties could write about bands, we probably wouldn't have any band articles. --Teratornis (talk) 23:29, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
::If you're not notable enough for Wikipedia yet, see WP:OUTLET and wikiindex:WikiIndex. And in the meantime, practice editing on other bands' articles on Wikipedia. --Teratornis (talk) 23:32, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

    Newcomer task[edit]

It appears that the “so called” Newcomer task is already a disaster in progress. Despite being a regular editor I had not heard of it until 17 May 2024, when I noticed a piece of text in Highway 1 (Queensland) had been removed and replaced with identical text, and with no explanation other than “Newcomer task” on 16 May 2024.

I asked the question “How can the removal of information be described as a newcomer task?”. I have since been accused of making an unreferenced removal. How can this occur, and just what is a “Newcomer task”?

When this is sorted out please tak a look at Abernethy Road, where I asked a similar question and have not received any response. Downsize43 (talk) 05:16, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Downsize43: Those "Newcomer task" tags link to this page which should explain more thoroughly than I will be able to do here. Essentially, they are edits by new editors made to pages tagged as needing cleanup. It isn't an endorsement of the edit in any way, it is just intended to flag that the editor is new and was brought to that article rather than finding it on their own. Tollens (talk) 05:21, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'll additionally note that the edit of 15 May on Abernethy Road didn't remove text and then replace it with identical text, it instead added two citations. Tollens (talk) 05:24, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also on Highway 1 (Queensland), you may have been looking at the wrong diff. The edit flagged as a newcomer task did not remove any information – the edit removing information was another editor undoing the previous "newcomer task" edit because it was unsourced. Tollens (talk) 05:26, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Downsize43. My first observation is that newcomers often make mistakes, and that is not surprising. I suggest that you read Wikipedia:Growth Team features which explains newcomer tasks in great detail. If you still have concerns, then Wikipedia talk:Growth Team features is probably the best place to discuss them. Cullen328 (talk) 05:30, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Finally found something on Archive 1. Hardly the best place for it. Urgently need to get it "out there" somewhere and let the world know. Downsize43 (talk) 06:41, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Downsize43: Both your descriptions of what happened in the newcomer task are incorrect so I wonder whether you know how diffs work. In the page history [1], click the "prev" link in the line tagged with "Newcomer task" to get [2]. The left-hand side is before the edit and the right-hand side is after. The edit added this text: The highway is part of the famous "Big Lap" on National Route 1. A Google search shows it's correct but it was unsourced and maybe not important enough for the lead so somebody reverted it in this edit. This time "Newcomer task" is on the left side which is before the edit so the removal is not itself the newcomer task. See more at Help:Diff. PrimeHunter (talk) 09:23, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: Whichever way you look at it the fact remains that the replacement of the previously removed text has no reference, therefore it is entitled to be questioned or removed. I was merely questioning why there was no reference for the added “fact”. Downsize43 (talk) 07:22, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Update New Description for Company Profile[edit]

I want to update Godrej Properties current description. Could you please help me on this? 182.78.53.202 (talk) 06:16, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It depends on what you want to say and whether there is a conflict of interest involved in some way with the company; see also WP:BOSS. It also has to be said that Godrej Properties may have difficulty meeting the general notability guideline in its current form due to an excess of primary sourcing.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 07:06, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

correcting an error of fact in an article[edit]

In the article on Frederick Russell Burnham, in the "Mexico" section, it describes a presidential summit taking place in 1909. It lists a number of agencies providing security and includes the FBI. The FBI did not exist in 1909. 2600:6C40:5800:4BD:7C19:89AF:F8E1:243E (talk) 15:53, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Changing infobox to...?[edit]

So I'm in a bit of a conundrum here. I wanted to update Topps but apparently, it was acquired by Fanatics in 2022. How would I go around changing it? Is it a subsidiary now? Klinetalkcontribs 15:59, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Do you want to find out if Topps is a subsidiary or how to update the infobox? this suggests that Topps is a subsidiary. TSventon (talk) 18:41, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@TSventon Update the infobox to a subsidiary, seems complicated for a first time affair so some guidance would be helpful. Klinetalkcontribs 00:42, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Kline, the infobox pages are usually helpful. I checked Template:Infobox company and found
    "type
Type of ownership in the company (not their legal form of incorporation), wiki-linked where appropriate. To list percentages owned of a private company, use the ownership parameter. Available types:
    Private
    Public
    Subsidiary
    Division"
So Topps could be a division or a subsidiary.
If you want help finding information about the company you could try Wikipedia:Reference desk/Humanities. TSventon (talk) 05:29, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Danny lost: They are both at the right margin for me. Where do you see them and what is your browser? "class=notpageimage" ended in the wrong place because there was a wrong ]]. I have removed it.[4] PrimeHunter (talk) 22:36, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Thank you.
I saw this on Chrome, both pc and mobile. On mobile I use the monobook style w/ the option "Enable responsive mode (Adapt layout to screen size on mobile) - on. Maybe it's turning it off that helped? When logged off, on mobile both maps are center-page. But I guess this is a default override behaviour?
    trespassers william (talk) 11:36, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Danny lost: It's apparently a feature of responsive mode. If the window is deemed too narrow to get a good layout by placing text to the left of an image then float right is ignored. It doesn't matter whether location map templates were used. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:02, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Picture[edit]

    Hi!

I am creating my profile on Wiki and I cannot upload a picture I took myself and own - there should be no issue but I receive a notification (We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Please only upload photos that you took yourself with your camera, or see what else is acceptable. See the guide to make sure the file is acceptable and learn how to upload it on Wikimedia). Can you help please?

    Jana Jana Koci (talk) 02:17, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not quite sure what exactly did you mean by "profile" here. If you meant User Page, which is a page that tells other editors about your activities on Wikipedia, then personal photos are not necessary. If you meant a Wikipedia article, however, please note that creating an article about yourself or anyone/anything related to you is strongly discouraged.
I see that you've already uploaded a photo of yourself. If that's the image in question, I think it is ready to be used already. I would agree with the notification in that it is hard to tell that you took the photo all by yourself. Tutwakhamoe (talk) 03:25, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Jana Koci, you have created a draft for an article about yourself. This is not a good idea: please read and digest Wikipedia:Autobiography. -- Hoary (talk) 07:57, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Mabel Normand[edit]

As a living relative I would like to be included in the mini bio as I have seen in other bio’s. with thanks for your help and understanding in this matter Yours sincerely Stephen Normand Great-Nephew of Mabel Normand Stephen Great-Nephew of Mabel Normand (talk) 15:23, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The way Wikipedia works is that all content is based on what reliable sources have already written about a subject, we can't base content on your personal experience. However, it does sound as if you have done some press yourself, so that could possibly be used as a basis for some article content. Article Review[edit]

How to receive an article review? How long of a wait is normal wait time? Article is in "draft" ready to be published draft:Nerijus Glezekas.

    Thank you Petrichor2.0 (talk) 17:04, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It can take some time, as of right now there are 2,750 pending submissions in Category:Pending AfC submissions, the oldest of which has been pending for three months. Just Step Sideways from this world ..... today 17:16, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Petrichor2.0 The draft now has the previous decline notices restored. There is now a big blue box which would allow it to be re-submitted to review. However, you should not do that until you have updated the draft to address the concerns of the previous reviewers. Mike Turnbull (talk) 17:23, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your answer, I really appreciate it. I have been perfecting the article for year now, adding notable sources and addressing the issues previewers found. Hopefully, it will be to their liking now. Petrichor2.0 (talk) 17:27, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Petrichor2.0, your draft is overtly promotional and shot through with non-neutral phrases. It needs heavy editing to bring it into compliance with the Neutral point of view, which is a core content policy. Cullen328 (talk) 18:29, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
An unreferenced sentence such as He is recognized for his musicianship, substantial lyrical work and charismatic stage personality (who says so?) is blatantly promotional and completely unacceptable. Everything in the article must be credited to a reliable independent source. Shantavira|feed me 08:41, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Petrichor2.0 Against my advice, you have re-submitted the draft and I predict it will be declined again. Whole sections (e.g. "Influences") are uncited, which is against the policies for biographies of living people because of lack of verification. The other comments made above are also still relevant. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:50, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've given Petrichor's draft an edit. I don't know if the subject meets notability, but at least it is not promotional anymore. Zanahary (talk) 02:32, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Harv errors[edit]

Hi Folks!! On the Rudolf Roessler article which I updated recently its coming up with harv errors in orange. I don't know what the problem is. Any ideas? scope_creepTalk 21:05, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Scope creep: I'm not seeing any harv errors in orange. Did you resolve this yourself since you did further edit the article after posting this question? If not, perhaps you can indentify the reference or references that are showing error messages. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:00, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Marchjuly: Its seems to be working. I checked it on Opera and no sign of the errors. I use Firefox and switched everything off, all the add-in and still there, restarted my pc. It states in the first ref "Harv error: linked from CITEREFAccoceQuet1967" in orange. Its weird. scope_creepTalk 22:10, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Marchjuly: Possibly one of the scripts im using that has a reporting bug. scope_creepTalk 22:11, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Was it really necessary to ping me three times in the same discussion thread within a seven-minute period? Doing so reminds me of people who repeatedly tap on the bell at the front desk of a hotel or at the register counter of a restaurant because they're unable to wait to be help or because they're not being helped as quickly as they want. Anyway, it seems like DuncanHill as figured out the nature of the problem you're experiencing; so, perhaps things will now be resolved. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:33, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see it, and also on Alexander von Humboldt. The error messages are generated by User:Trappist the monk/HarvErrors.js. The documentation for that says "This is a "wrong section" error; You included short footnote Anderson inline, and there is a valid full citation for it in the bottom matter, but it's in the wrong section, such as "Further reading". It should be in either "Bibliography", or "Works cited" (which must be a level two section heading). Dark orange by default." As far as I can see it should not be showing on these pages. Ping @Trappist the monk: DuncanHill (talk) 22:33, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I do not see the messages that you are complaining about. I'm using the latest version of Chrome and have looked at the offending articles with it and with ms Edge. It has been said here that the messages are not appearing in the Opera browser so that suggests that this may be a Firefox-only issue.

    search box[edit]

I can't find the search box on the home page. Can you help me Alanwexler2 (talk) 22:00, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Assuming that you're referring to the English Wikipedia homepage, the search box is on the top right for desktop, or would appear after tapping the magnifier icon for mobile webpage. If you still can't find the searchbox, you can still search with Google by typing site:en.wikipedia.org after your search phrase. Tutwakhamoe (talk) 23:20, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Alanwexler2: As you're a new user and it doesn't appear you're editing from a mobile device, the search field should be at the top of the page in the centre. If you can't see it, assuming you're using a Windows computer, you can make it active by using the key combination Alt+⇧ Shift+F. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 00:13, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I want to propose a mass renaming of ALL Chinese train stations - how do I do so?[edit]

However, there must be thousands of articles that I would have to change. Where can I propose this change? Félix An (talk) 01:11, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

An RFC is probably your best bet. You might want to notify relevant Wikiprojects like WikiProject Trains or WikiProject China. Alternatively, if you're 100% sure that it's not controversial, you could use ; the documentation has more information on how to do multiple pages. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 02:33, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Félix An, maybe I was sleepy, but it took me some time to work out what you were saying. But I imagine that you mean this: "Since the English name used by China Railway for any Chinese train station consisting of a place name plus cardinal direction now doesn't use the place name in pinyin plus a cardinal direction in English (such as 'Hangzhou East railway station') but instead renders the cardinal direction too in pinyin (such as 'Hangzhoudong railway station'), ..." I suppose you'll either have to provide evidence that the latter really are the common names, or have to argue that one or more other factors should outweigh the criterion of commonness. -- Hoary (talk) 04:32, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's interesting, but likely controversial, especially when there are Chinese OTAs such as trip.com are using the English cardinal directions rather than pinyin. Do open a discussion first before doing or requesting for the mass move. Using the Chinese cardinal directions is definitely WP:OFFICIAL at the very least though, as reflected on the 12306 app. – robertsky (talk) 06:12, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see that Brussels-midi is a redirect to Brussels-South railway station, but Paris Gare du Nord is a redirect to Gare du Nord, so there's no consistent policy here. (There are direct trains to both from London. In my experience my fellow Brits refer to them by their French names.) Maproom (talk) 06:18, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think this is going to go through, but generally you'd want to make a post on WP:NCZH, MOS:ZH, or both. Remsense 06:22, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Source Reliability[edit]

Hi all, I'm working on a draft for a grade-II listed factory (here for anybody interested). I was wondering if someone could look at this pdf source and give their thoughts on its reliability. It covers events which are otherwise difficult to find elsewhere, but editorial oversight and the company's incentives to produce the report are questionable. Pahunkat (talk) 22:45, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Biased sources can still be reliable for facts. Section 6, which lays out the consultancy's argumentation regarding development of the site, is probably too biased to cite, but the rest of the report doesn't seem problematic in my opinion. Folly Mox (talk) 23:16, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How does one add a Wikipedia entry for, say, a new book series or its fictional characters? 92.25.136.63 (talk) 01:59, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Does the book/series meet these guidelines for inclusion? Zanahary (talk) 02:16, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Fictional characters are notable only when reliable, published sources that are entirely independent of the book, the author and the publisher devote significant attention to the fictional character. Not passing mentions, but delving deeply. Cullen328 (talk) 04:16, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    I need help from a Wikitable wizard[edit]

    Hello!
I'm working on Sikidy and want to copy a table from a source. The table has some complicated headers, with some nesting. Would anyone be willing to help me out with them? I can't seem to figure out how to do them. Below are the header rows alone (which in the wikitable I would want to all be shaded dark, as headers are)

Thank you very much! Zanahary (talk) 02:15, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

With visual editing, you'll need to have a 3×5 header, and select the cells to be merged to form the long cells. As for shading, switch to source editing and change "|" of each cell to "!". You can copy the following table:

What should this article's title be?[edit]

Hi there, I want to write an article about Komatsu's surface mining excavators, however, am unsure what to name the article title. The model series starts from PC2000 and goes to PC8000. Why can't I name it Komatsu PC-series excavators? Because all of their other models use the PC prefix, except for their surface mining excavators all models are numbers in the thousands. Any suggestions? Best, X750. Spin a yarn? Articles I've screwed over? 05:58, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@X750: Komatsu just calls them "Surface mining excavators" at https://www.komatsu.com/en/products/excavators/surface-mining-excavators/. "Komatsu surface mining excavators" has no Google hits but I cannot think of a better name when they have many other excavators with PC numbers. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:06, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
