The Georgia Southern Railroad was formed in 1874 to assume the operations of the bankrupt Selma, Rome and Dalton Railroad. The Georgia Southern was in turn absorbed by the East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia Railroad in 1881.
By 1895, its trackage had become part of the Southern Railway which was merged into today's Norfolk Southern Railway in 1982.
