Line 17: Line 17:

There are two (principal) Newburghs in Scotland; Newburgh, Fife and Newburgh, Aberdeenshire. After which was Newburgh, NY named? It is not clear why Cadwallader Colden, who had a Welsh first name, was born in Ireland and whose father was from Duns (formerly in Berwickshire; now Borders) in Scotland would have chosen to commemorate either Newburgh. Perhaps he just thought that 'new burgh' was an appropriate monicker? Butler26 (talk) 12:16, 9 March 2023 (UTC)

:In all the time I've lived around here no one has ever specified which one. And given that Colden lived out in what is now the town of Montgomery west of Newburgh, I'm not sure the name was really something that had anything to do with him.

Pronunciation

Sure, if you're someone who inserts a liquid "u" sound whenever possible, you might say [NYOO-burg] but pretty much everyone in Newburgh and surrounding areas says [NOO-burg].67.83.99.134 (talk) 15:44, 10 April 2020 (UTC)corpho[reply]

I think I had tried to explain that once before to someone else; will change. Daniel Case (talk) 16:13, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Which Newburgh, Scotland?

There are two (principal) Newburghs in Scotland; Newburgh, Fife and Newburgh, Aberdeenshire. After which was Newburgh, NY named? It is not clear why Cadwallader Colden, who had a Welsh first name, was born in Ireland and whose father was from Duns (formerly in Berwickshire; now Borders) in Scotland would have chosen to commemorate either Newburgh. Perhaps he just thought that 'new burgh' was an appropriate monicker? Butler26 (talk) 12:16, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

In all the time I've lived around here no one has ever specified which one. And given that Colden lived out in what is now the town of Montgomery west of Newburgh, I'm not sure the name was really something that had anything to do with him.
Perhaps an email to the HSNBHH is in order. Daniel Case (talk) 21:30, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
