Elizabeth Imogene Webber is a fictional character on the American soap opera General Hospital, who has been played by actress Rebecca Herbst since 1997. In 1999, the role brought Herbst the Soap Opera Digest Award for Outstanding Younger Lead Actress, as well as an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Younger Actress in 1999 and a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in 2007.[1]

Character background

The character is the granddaughter of Dr. Steve Hardy, one of General Hospital's original characters. Elizabeth first came to Port Charles as a rebellious teenager who was compared unfavorably to her "perfect" older sister Sarah. She was raped and was helped in the aftermath by Lucky Spencer, who became her boyfriend and later her husband.

May 1998 brought more turmoil into Eizabeth's life when a motorcycle shop burst into flames. Lucky was supposedly trapped in the fire and had died. Hurting from the death of her first love, Elizabeth found comfort and a new found friendship in Lucky's former employer and friend, Jason Morgan. The two began a friendship after running into each other one night at Jake's and the two bonded over the loss of their first loves.

After the revelation of Lucky being alive, and Jason leaving Port Charles twice, the two decided to try at a relationship, but Elizabeth soon left Jason after he lied to her about Sonny's fake death and she realized she wasn't ready to be a part of Jason's lifestyle.

Several months after her break up with Jason, Elizabeth met and eventually married Ric Lansing. She miscarried his child when she was pushed down a flight of stairs by Ric's jealous ex-lover Faith Roscoe. However, Ric blamed his half-brother, mobster Sonny Corinthos. He had a mental breakdown and abducted Sonny's pregnant wife Carly, kept her chained to the wall in a panic room in his home with Elizabeth, and planned to give Carly's baby to Elizabeth to raise. Elizabeth knew nothing of Ric's crimes and when she learned of them, ultimately divorced him.

Eliabeth has a toddler son, Cameron, by the now deceased Alexander "Zander" Smith (born Alexander Lewis).

She had a one-night stand with Zander during her break-up with Ric. Afterwards, she reconciled briefly with Ric and planned to raise Cameron with him. However, Ric and Elizabeth were unable to get past his obsession with his brother, Sonny Corinthos.

She again miscarried in 2005 a surrogate baby for Jasper "Jax" Jacks and Courtney Matthews. She had offered to be a surrogate to earn money to help pay for Lucky's medical bills.

She is a nurse at General Hospital and is dealing with her police officer husband Lucky's addiction to painkillers, and her love for mobster friend Jason Morgan. She's currently pregnant with Jason's child, a fact that she and Jason are keeping hidden from Lucky.

Recent storyline

After discovering her husband in bed with Maxie Jones in mid-2006, Elizabeth then slept with old flame Jason Morgan. She later discovered that she was pregnant, with paternity uncertain since she used a faulty Enduro condom manufactured by ELQ, the Quartermaine family company (a batch of faulty condoms which also caused other unplanned pregnancies in Port Charles). Elizabeth divorced Lucky, and results of a prenatal paternity test were looked at by Elizabeth in October 2006, but she then burned the results before they were revealed to the audience. For months, all of the other characters on the show, including both Lucky and Jason, assumed that Lucky was the father, and Elizabeth simply did not disagree with them. Lucky, currently out of drug rehab, was also still unaware of Elizabeth's affair with Jason.

During a 24-inspired storyline during the February 2007 sweeps period, a hostage situation then led to Elizabeth and Jason becoming trapped together in an elevator, after the MetroCourt hotel was blown up. While trapped, Elizabeth revealed to Jason that he is the father of her child. Elizabeth received medical treatment, and was told that despite the stress of the hostage crisis and the possibility of premature labor pains, that her baby is fine. In order to try and protect Lucky and Sam, Jason and Elizabeth decided to let their loved ones to believe that Lucky is the baby's father and allow Lucky to raise the child.

Jason however continues to have doubts as to whether he can stay away from his own child. And even though Elizabeth has recently remarried Lucky, she continues to have lingering romantic feelings for Jason.

Elizabeth went into premature labor. Instead of having the baby, she decided to take medication's to stop the contractions.

She also told Jason she loved him but could never be with him because their world's are too different. He told her he would stay away from her to make this desicion easier for her.
