Saponification in Carpet Cleaning

Saponification is used in the first step of the industry standard method of carpet cleaning set by the Institute for Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC). The pre-conditioning step is followed up by hot water extraction where the use of a detergent ensures the removal of saponified oils and soils and leaves the carpet residue free.[1]

Preconditioning Step: During preconditioning a chemical designed to emulsify, saponify, and suspend the oxidized oils and soils is applied to the carpet. Mechanical agitation must be applied either by a grooming rake or carpet brush. Saponify: (Chemists Definition) hydrolyze lipids into an acid and alcohol as a result of being treated with an alkali. ie. use chemistry to convert grease and oils into soap.[2]

Extraction: The oils and soils oxidized, emulsified, saponified, and suspended by the preconditioning step can now be extracted with the equipment. The use of a detergent during this step of the carpet cleaning process ensures the removal of the oils, soils, and preconditioning chemicals. [3]
