Southwest DeKalb is a high school. SWD houses the High Achievers Magnet Program for the south end of the county, and along with the resident students hosts an enrollment of over 1600 well rounded students. Consistently, SWD students receive thousands of dollars in college scholarships for academics as well as athletics.

Overview

The administration and faculty believe that the purpose of education is: -To help young people gain knowledge. -To assist young people in acquiring the academic and technical skills necessary to lead a productive and satisfying life. -To provide them with positive experiences, which will enhance daily living and promote success in future endeavors.

School Goals

The goal at Southwest DeKalb High School is to provide a positive, nurturing environment conducive to learning. The SWD staff are dedicated to education and promotes respect for all people along with an awareness and sensitivity to lifestyles arising from cultural diversity.

Unique Assets

Over 300 students are members of the band. An afternoon tutorial is offered for students in extracurricular activities, students who need assistance in passing the Georgia High School Graduation Test, and any student who needs help with their class work. Most SWD faculty spend ten hours or more each day in the building assisting students in some way. SWD also offers additional classes and tutoring on Saturday mornings. SWD was the pilot school for the Teacher Cadet Program beginning in 1992 and still fosters this program today with competition at a peak to be accepted into the program. SWD also houses a Navy ROTC program. Southwest Dekalb's Advanced Placement students in U.S. Government and History led by Mr. William Thomas were the state champions in the 1998-99 "We the People . . . the Citizens and the Constitution" competition and, SWD repeated as state champions for 1999-2000.

Awards and Recognitions

The SWD High School Band was the only band to play in the Opening Ceremonies of the 1996 Summer Olympics and was also featured in the hit movie Drumline in 2002. The SWD band has also played in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The track team has held state championships for numerous years. The Southwest Dekalb Marching Panthers also played in the 2006 Rose Parade themed "It's Magical".
