Madlax (マドラックス Madorakkusu) is one of the two protagonists of the 26-episode anime television series Madlax produced in 2004 by the Bee Train animation studio.

Twelve years ago

During Margaret Burton's encounter with her father who has lost his sense when Friday Monday used the world of Awakening on him. Margaret wanted to live but also wanted not to shoot her own father, herself splitted into three personae: the "memory keeper" Laetitia, the sinful Madlax, and the one who has only retained the Gift and the original name and appearance (Margaret herself).

Suddenly a young girl appeared and shot down Richard Burton, killing him and saw Margaret. Then an explosion came out, knocked over the two girls. Since then, their memories have been lost forever, and the only thing they remember was the word Madlax.

Adopted by SSS

Madlax was soon discorvered and sent to an orphanage. Weeks later, a mysterious man named SSS came and adopted her. SSS trained Madlax with the fighting techniques. A few years later, Madlax grown to be a very attractive young woman. She became a well-known agent with the percent of mission successfull is 98%. Since Madlax was the only thing she remembered, she adopted it her codename. Madlax believed that her father is fighting somewhere in the civl war-country Gazth-Sonika. She has the missing page of Margaret's Secondary.

Meeting Margaret

At the beginning of the series, Madlax, working alternately as an assassin and a bodyguard, helps various people to either survive in the harsh environment, or leave it for good. Thus, for example, she dragged Pete, a Galza freedom fighter, who carried important data, out of a Royalist blockade; she shaked off Chris Krana's pursuers, so that he could meet his father, Galza's general Min Durk; she repeatedly saved the life of Eric Gillain, a bibliodetective (a person whose task is to search for rare books) from Nafrece. Then she known the civl war was triggered by Enfant, she intented to destroy the organization. Madlax also made an enemy with Limelda Jorg, a military woman soldier.

In episode 11, Madlax became the bodyguard Vanessa Renee, who has connection with Margaret Burton which eventually lead to her meeting with Margaret. Margaret told Madlax about Eric Gillian and Secondary, remembering lady Kuanjita, they went to her village. Kuanjita told them about the three holy books and the gate to open the truth, Margaret intented to collect all books to regained her lost memories.

Since there, Madlax had fougth Limelda while Margaret was being hypnotized by the holy books. The battle later lead Vanessa's death. Seeing that her friend and tutor was killed, Margaret shot Madlax because she knew she (Madlax) was the one who killed her father. Madlax did not die, she and Elinor and Nahkl then tried to rescue Margaret from Friday Monday. Elinor, who is Margaret's maid, died because of blood loss. As soon as Madlax reached the residence, Margaret accused her of killing her father, her tutor, and her devoted maidservant and shot her, when Madlax did not resist at all.

Margaret, together with Friday Monday have finally gathered all the three books, opening the Gate. Monday decided that it is time to start the ritual that he attempted in 1999 once again and, finally, plunge the world into its "natural state", that is, a global total war. During the ritual, Margaret's memories finally returned and revealed that she herself killed her own father. Madlax then appeared, shot down Friday Monday. Knowing that herself is Margaret's sins and Laeticia have to die forever or live depending on Margaret. Madlax and Leatice fused into Margaret before she ready to open the Gate.

Friday Monday returned to his residence after Margaret splitted herself into three again. Madlax showed up, killing Monday and destroying the residence. Margaret together with Leaticia (who is now known at her sister) returned to Nafreece, while Limelda, having made peace with Madlax, driving her out of the combat zone. The series ended with the conversation between Madlax and SSS on cellphone, requesting her a new mission which said by Madlax that he had her in his heart.
