Hadleigh High School is situated on Highlands Road in Hadleigh, Suffolk. It is a secondary school of around 750 pupils aged 11 to 16. It is a specialist Science School and has a reputation as one of the best schools in the county.

Specialist Science

Hadleigh High School was named a Specialist Science School due to a number of new resources that were added to the facilities.

Subjects

Up until Year 9, the following subjects are compulsory:

  • English - Drama is included with this subject.
  • Maths
  • Religious Education
  • French
  • History
  • Geography
  • Music
  • I.T
  • Science

If students show exceptional ability in French in Year 7 they are given the opportunity to study German during Year 8 and 9 although they can drop this if they do not wish to pursue the subject at GCSE. Once GCSE options arrive, only English, Maths, Science and R.E are compulsory subjects. Drama becomes a separate subject at GCSE and Science is split into the three main areas: Chemistry, Biology and Physics.

Swing Band

In the local area, the school's Swing Band is very well known. The band can be seen at school concerts and have even gone to places such as Disneyland Paris to perform for holiday goers.

Captains

The 'Captain' system is unique to the school. Once students enter Year 10 they are given the choice to apply to be a Form or Games Captain. Form Captains are a post of responsibility that are given to responsible students. Their role includes looking after and mentoring younger students, arranging activities and helping at extra curricular events. Games Captains arrange sporting activities for the rest of the students in the school. Out of those who apply, two students are offered the post of School Captain; the equivalent of Head Boy and Girl. The post is very demanding and includes arranging the Form/Games Captains, mentoring younger students and representing the school at various events and functions.

School Productions

In the local area, the school is renowned for its productions that it performs every year in February. The productions always have a large number of auditionees as the event is considered very popular among the pupils. The productions have been running for a large number of years. Productions in the past have been:

The 2008 school production will be: The Sound of Music

Sixth Form

The school does not have a sixth form attached to it. Because of this the large majority of students that want to pursue Higher Education continue to Colchester Sixth Form College, Northgate Sixth Form or Colchester Royal Grammar School.

Incidents

On November 22nd 2007, teachers were alerted of an intruder coming to the school and taking photos, possibly of the students. Currently, this person has not been identified, and the teachers have been told to stay vigilant.
