A flag is usually a piece of cloth which has a specific design on it for a specific country. For instance, the Irish flag has green on it to represent the Catholic religion in Ireland. But not all flags have this peticular system. The Swedish flag has the Scandinavian cross on it which represents Sweden as a Scandinavian country. The most recent adopted flag is the flag of Iraq which now has no green stars (due to the current war in Iraq). A permanent design for the flag is expected in early 2009. Many flags throughout the world have different designs to others but some look alike. For example, the flag of the USA and the flag of Liberia both have red and white stripes but the flag of the USA has 13 stripes while the Liberian flag has 11 stripes. The oldest flag in the world still in use today is the flag of Denmark which was flown since the early 14th century. The flag of Denmark also has the Scandinavian cross on it just like Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland. The only flag in the world just to have one colour is the flag of Libya which has green and nothing else. The British flag is on a number of other flags to indicate that they are all Commonwealth Nations. This means that they are under rule by Britain. Here is a list of them: Australia, New Zeland, Fiji, Tuvalu, Bermuda, Niue and of course, Britain. But not all Commonwealth countries have the British flag on their flag. Some of these include: Canada, Papua New Guinea, Jamaica and Grenada.
