==Design and development==
Officially classified as a large regional jet it can have 110-130 seats and would thus be competetive with the Boeing 737-600 and A319 on short haul routes. The engine chosen for the jet is the Pratt and Whitney Geared Turbofan, this being the larger version of the engine that will debut with the Mitsubishi regional jet the other aircraft from Japan. Entry into service is expected to be somewhere around 2014 and is said to offer up to 40% cost savings over the Boeing 737-600. Unconfirmed reports suggest strong interest shown by Southwest Airlines and other low cost airlines.

The Kawasaki YPX is a new airliner proposed by Kawasaki Heavy Industries of Japan. The YPX is based on the Kawasaki P-1 and CX aircraft now under development for the JASDF.
