Welcome to my Talk Page!

Thank you for coming by, however please note that I have largely retired from Wikipedia. Messages left here will not receive a prompt response, if ever. Please also note that I no longer hold any access rights; if you are contacting me in relation to a block, deletion, or any other administrative action I have taken, I am unable to assist you. Please contact another administrator for help.

If you do have an urgent need to contact me specifically, such as for one of my bots, please send me an email via Special:Emailuser/Hersfold.

User:Hersfold/Talk Header - ve

William Penn Protection

Since I saw the "no talkback" part of your header, I thought I'd reply here and copy this response to my talkpage. Thankyou for protecting the page.

I think I probably asked the wrong question with my {{helpme}} template, it was supposed to be in two parts: does this need reporting to WP:RFPP? If so how do I do that?

I appreciate your busy, so I'll just ask if what I posted was okay to go on the WP:RFPP noticeboard.

NullofWest (talk) 22:17, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yay! Someone does read my talk header! :-)
Yes, that probably could have been posted there; most requests for protection are due to high levels of vandalism from multiple sources. As for how to post, there are instructions on that page. All reports are in this type of format:
===={{la|Article title}}====
 '''Semi/Full/Move protection'''. Reason for request. ~~~~
If you're not entirely sure, you are welcome to ask me or another admin on their talk page, or go ahead and submit a report. If we don't think protection is needed, we'll explain why at RFPP. Hope this helped, sorry I didn't fully answer earlier. Happy editing! Hersfold (t/a/c) 00:16, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thankyou, the main reason for the request was that I couldn't find the relevant part of the instructions at the time, so wasn't sure what to do. I'll post a fresh request somewhere appropriate if I need help again in future. (if it's not urgent but is related to this probably at the RFPP talk page.) Template help

Hi Hersfold, I was wondering if you could help me quickly on a template I was trying to make. You gave me some information at the help desk and I was trying to figure it out. You tould me to type:

{| class="wikitable" style="blah blah blah"
|-
! Number !! Name
{{#if: {{{1|}}} | <!-- Code added if parameter 1 exists -->
{{!-}}
{{!}} 1 {{!!}} {{{1}}} }}{{#if: {{{2|}}} | <!-- Code added if parameter 2 exists -->
{{!-}}
{{!}} 2 {{!!}} {{{2}}} }}{{#if: {{{3|}}} | <!-- Code added if parameter 3 exists -->
{{!-}}
{{!}} 3 {{!!}} {{{3}}} }}
|}

However, when I type {{User:Arbitrarily0/Templates/Test|Joe|Mary|John}}, it looks like this: User:Arbitrarily0/Templates/Test Do you think you know what the problem is? Thanks for your help, αЯβιτЯαЯιŁΨθ (talk) 11:13, 1 October 2008 (UTC) [reply]

{| class="wikitable" style="blah blah blah"

{{!}} 1 {{!!}} {{{1}}} }}
{{#if: {{{2|}}} | <!-- Code added if parameter 2 exists -->

{{!}} 2 {{!!}} {{{2}}} }}
{{#if: {{{3|}}} | <!-- Code added if parameter 3 exists -->

{{!}} 3 {{!!}} {{{3}}} }}

That looks like it works. Sorry about that, sometimes the newlines work out kinda weird. If you'd like, I've got some more information at User:Hersfold/Adopt/Templates and User:Hersfold/Adopt/AdvancedTemplates. Hersfold (t/a/c) 19:39, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that does work. However, now it starts creating extra line breaks:
{{User:Arbitrarily0/Templates/Test|Joe|Mary|John}}
now yields:

User:Arbitrarily0/Templates/Test

Note all the extra lines. Is there anyway that this too can be fixed? Thanks a lot for your help, αЯβιτЯαЯιŁΨθ (talk) 01:01, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Grr. I'll work on it in my sandbox, and copy the code to your template page when I'm done. Hersfold (t/a/c) 01:41, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Western Virginia Land Trust

Why did you delete this new article? It is not blatant advertising. There are several similar pages on other land trusts on Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Branford_Land_Trust http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_Lands_Trust http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mountain_Conservation_Trust_of_Georgia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Land_Conservancy

What specifically is advertising content on the Western Virgina Land Trust page that makes it different from these other articles?

Please advise and I will correct it.

Thank you

Wvlt (talk) 20:17, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

First off, based on your username, you appear to have a conflict of interest with the land trust. Wikipedia strives to be neutral at all times, and so to that end we ask users who have a personal affiliation with a subject to not write about that subject. Even if an editor doesn't intend to do so, things they write about that subject may be biased in one way or another. In this case, your article seems to be highly promotional and doesn't really establish why the land trust is notable. As for the other articles you mentioned, they are quite irrelevant when reviewing the merits of the article you wrote. WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS has some more information on that line of discussion. You may want to read through our policies on advertising and our guideline on how to write your first article. In the meantime, please do not continue to recreate your article. Doing so may lead to a block until we are sure you understand our policies and are willing to abide by them. I won't delete the article this time, but I will be asking another admin to review it. Assistance Request with SSP

If I could request your assistance with one ssp that seems to have fallen well below the radar. Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets/Thrindel was not done correctly and as such isnt listed on the ssp page. It seems to have degraded into another one of the slagfests over COI allegations on who Thrindel actually is. While there hasnt been anything put forth on the COIN this user is constantly attacked on user talk pages, and article talk pages. The contributors to the ssp have both been warned on thier respective talk pages for trying to out Thrindel. If you could take a look at that ssp, assistance is appreciated as it won't go anywhere I feel as it isnt done correctly to begin with (I dont think a ssp is the proper course of action for that matter). Thanks for any assistance. Knowledgeum :  Talk  20:25, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've closed it, someone apparently doesn't realize that  CheckUser is not magic pixie dust and SSP is even less so. Thanks for the note. Hersfold (t/a/c) 22:37, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yogurtland

Hersfold:

I wrote an article about Yogurtland, similar to the Pinkberry Pinkberry. The article cited review materials, similar to those cited in the Pinkberry pages and provided similar information, formatting and review. I know that in the past this page has been removed for "blatant" advertising, but the article in its current version provides a full assesment and contribution. I was curios, as this is my first article, why this page was removed and what can be done to have it undeleted.

Oxytousc (talk) 22:39, 2 October 2008 (UTC)oxytousc[reply]

Sorry for the long delay - you caught me as I was logging out and I forgot to check back later until I saw this just now. Your article was deleted for a highly promotional tone, exampled in phrases such as "inspired him to bring the frozen yogurt craze back to the United States," "currently 22 stores open nationwide including locations in Los Angeles, Orange County, Northern California, San Diego, New York, Las Vegas, Honolulu and Dallas," "up to 40% less expensive than other frozen yogurt shops," etc. Wikipedia strives to be neutral in all aspects, to ensure that the information we have is presented in a clear and unbiased manner for the best possible usage. The sources you provided also aren't what we consider to be reliable - they seem to be mainly reviews of the restaurant, whereas what we're looking for is mainly news coverage to ensure that the subject is notable enough for inclusion. You should look over the policies and guidelines I've linked to, as they should answer most of your questions, as well as our guide to writing your first article. I hope this helps, but if you need any more tips, drop me another line, or you can ask at the new contributor's help desk if you want a wider opinion. Welcome to Wikipedia. Template and Category Help

Hello, I was wondering if you knew how to transclude the contents of a category. Thank you for your time.— dαlus Contribs /Improve 13:24, 3 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Assuming you mean pages that are in the category and not just the blurb you see on the category page, it can't be done. {{Category:Foo Fighters}}, for example, will only produce "For more information, see Foo Fighters." along with the transwikis and all, but not the whole list of articles related to them. Sorry. Hersfold (t/a/c) 18:24, 3 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
:/ Well that is unfortunate. Are there any bots in existence that copy or update a user subpage regarding unblock requests?— dαlus Contribs /Improve 03:06, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Not on-wiki, at least, not that I know of. There's an IRC bot that reports when a new one is added in #wikipedia-en-unblock, though. Just out of curiosity, though, why? You wouldn't be able to act on those requests. Hersfold (t/a/c) 18:36, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I know I wouldn't, but at times I like to read them to see what other admins would do.— dαlus Contribs /Improve 21:20, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you

WHG Kingston your edits

Hi Hersfold: I am kind of new at this talk page stuff but I note that you have made several good additions to the page on the Kingsford family leading me to suspect that you miight have Toronto connections or further information on the Kingsford (Kingston) diaries. I have been trying to locate the Kingston diaries, in the possession of Kingsford and have reason to believe he may have deposited them with a University Libray in Canada. Also if you have information on Kingsford's dates that would be helpful. I will try to sign my page with the appropriate markup but my username is Varnesavant if it doesn't appear elsewhere or external contact nwolcott2@post.harvard.edu if all else fails. Thanks. Varnesavant (talk) 11:33, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

To be honest, I'm not at all sure what articles you're talking about. I haven't made any substantial content contributions in a while, and those names aren't ringing any bells with me. If I have made any edits to those articles, it was likely to remove vandalism or something. I live in the United States, and don't know anyone living in Canada. You might try asking someone in Category:Canadian Wikipedians, or a member of Wikipedia:WikiProject Canada. Sorry I can't be of more help. Hersfold (t/a/c) 18:25, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion process update

Just to let you know that there has been a recent update to the criteria for relisting AFDs. You can see the full details at WP:RELIST. The main update is that relisting an AFD a second time should only be done in exceptional circumstances. I'm letting you know because you have recently been active in relisting AFDs. Stifle (talk) 16:13, 5 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, thanks for the note. I'll take a look at the guideline. Hersfold (t/a/c) 18:51, 5 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you

Hi Hersfold,
I wanted to thank you again for helping me on my template problems. It's working great now. I've put the template at Template:Pages so now everybody will be able to use it. Please accept this barnstar from me, for you have most definitely earned it.

The da Vinci Barnstar

Hai!

Hey; just wondering about this. How is Kunta1988 offensive? Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 03:59, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Kunt = cunt = not the best name for someone who says they're here to edit constructively. If you really want to unblock them, more power to you, but I fail to see how anyone who registers with a name like that is here to be a useful contributor. Mind you, I've had some bad experiences with names like that... Hersfold (t/a/c) 04:06, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Note

Good day, I was wondering if you could check up on this when you have time. Best regards, --Kanonkas :  Talk  04:39, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I just posted on his talk page, oddly enough. :-) I'm also getting port 80 open, same as you, and it's staying open during multiple scans. I don't see any indication that it's secured in the manner he's mentioning. Hersfold (t/a/c) 04:46, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Vandal Warnings

Hello. Just to let you know, "4im" warnings are only intended for very severe vandalism. Edits such as this should be given the next warning in line; in that case, a level 1, since the last warning was issued in July. Thanks! Hersfold (t/a/c) 05:04, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, ok thanks. PwnerELITE (talk) 05:07, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Magpul Industries question/comment

Hello,

I noted that you deleted Magpul's page on the account of "blatant avertising" and would like to contend this. I am not in am way related to Magpul, but threw up that page hoping that contributors would bring it up to Wikipedia's standards.

Magpul as a company is quite significant, in that this small company has been able to design a small arms platform which rivals the multi generational and multi million dollar efforts by the US Gov. and contractors. If there was too much "advertising" in the page, couldn't the excess be trimmed? I will work to de-avertise the page if you could restore it...

BTW: I'm a wiki noob!

Hello, sorry it's taken so long to get back. I've been very busy the last several days and was forced to take a wikibreak in order to get things done. As for the article, it read very much like a sales catalogue, and had very few reliable sources, including several that were in violation of our external links policy. You may want to look through WP:SPAM and WP:NPOV for more information; the use of "peacock" terms was one problem specifically note by another editors, an evaluation which I agree with. To quote some instances: "...has demonstrated amazing resiliency and reliability." "Magpul's rifle stocks consistently have improved upon the ergonomics and design of..." "the Magpul Masada began as an evolutionary upgrade". As for improvements, there haven't been any substantial improvements to the article since May. You personally don't appear to be very active either. If you feel as though you understand the above policies, I can restore the article and move it to your userspace for work, but I need to be sure you're going to work on it so it doesn't just get deleted again. Please let me know what you want to do. Hersfold (t/a/c) 01:09, 13 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

IRC?

I keep hearing about discussions taking place in IRC. While I vaguely know what IRC is (which is to say, I read the article on it before coming here), I was curious as to where the wiki specific chats are taking place. - Arcayne (cast a spell) 14:26, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In a bunch of different channels, all on freenode. WP:IRC has a list of all of them. Before you join, be aware that IRC discussions do not constitute a consensus - discussions relating to content issues should generally take place on-wiki. Also, with a few channel-specific exceptions, there is no public logging of conversations, however you are welcome to keep records for your on personal reference.
