'''The Souljazz Orchestra''' is a band based out of Ottawa, Canada, formed in 2002. There are six members within this group from varying cultural backgrounds who wanted to show the grittier side of groove music. Pierre Chrétien, Marielle Rivard, Steve Patterson, Ray Murray, Zakari Frantz, and Phillippe Lafrenière are the individuals that comprise The Souljazz Orchestra.

==History==
These six members have honed their skills as a groove band with strong influences from many musical genres. Funk, soul, jazz, reggae, Afrobeat, and African music are just some of the genres encompassed into their rich soundOn their website the band acknowledges “various influences, from Fela Kuti to James Brown, from Mulatu Astatke to Pharoah Sanders, while always adding their personal touch to the mix.”

They originally started as an instrumental group, but were signed by Do Right! Music based out of Toronto and on their second CD they combined their unique sound with social commentary interwoven into their lyrics. This is not to say that the music is depressing, but quite the opposite. The lyrics make one think and encourage action, but have an upbeat backbeat and style that can be classified as a fusion of many styles with funk clearly discernible in many of their songs. The songs incorporate strong danceable rhythms in repeated, but complexly interwoven patterns, and call-response segments between instruments and artists or between instruments alone.

The band members take their lyrics and the messages they contain very seriously One performance on March 10th , 2007 they performed at ‘Music is a Weapon’ benefit concert to support and celebrate work being done in Burma and Sudan. They are also involved with the People Project that tries to make music without borders that is located simultaneously in both Ottawa and Mexico.

They have also started touring outside North America, particularly in Europe, where they have been a success. To date they have released 3 albums and one single of just them performing.

''Uprooted'' (2005) is a CD that reflects the band’s funk-jazz beginning and is mostly instrumental.

''Freedom No Go Die'' (2006) is the Souljazz Orchestra's second CD. Many of these songs have an element of salsa, funk and free jazz. Mighty Popo, a legendary Rwandan/ Burundian artist, as well as Alanna Stuart and Marielle Rivard, 2 Ottawa soul singers are featured on the CD.

''Manifesto'' (2008) reflects all their influences as one sound and delves into the tradition of folk tales, spirituality while their message remains politically conscious.

Mista President and Insurrection are the 2 songs on their single. ''Mista President'' is their song that has received the most attention, especially as it was one of the Top 10 Songs of 2006 on Gilles Peterson Worldwide on BBC, Radio 1 in the UK. ''Insurrection'' is an instrumental funk number on the B side.

==Members==
'''Zakari Frantz''', who plays saxaphone and flute, moved to Ottawa in 2005 and soon became a regular player with the Souljazz Orchestra in November. He was and continues to be a freelance jazz musician, when not performing with the group, or other groups. He also teaches music.

'''Phillippe Lafrenière''' is a drummer and vocalist with the Souljoazz Orchestra who in his own words “is developing an inter-cultural, multi-lingual solo project on vocals, guitar and percussion” in varying languages, such as Spanish, Portugese, French and English. He hopes to sing about issues that affect people not only socially, but spiritually and express cultural interchange conveyed in his music. He is also a co-founder of the People Project, that is a group that “brings the divergent influences of blues and Latin together in a dynamic fusion of folk, funk and roots music.”

'''Marielle Rivard''' is a singer who is an artist, who likes to not only sing, but write and is a B-girl.

Some '''collaborators''' with the Souljazz Orchestra listed on their CD as well as their site are Mighty Popo (a Rwandan/ Burundian musician based out of Ottawa), Alanna Stuart (a soul singer), Maike Murray Maas (the unofficial Souljazz trumpetist) and Gabriel Brofman (a Mexican guitarrista, who is an honourary member of The Souljazz Orchestra).
