Translation protocol

Another question on editing the chemistry articles. I found a stub which has a reasonable article in another language (German in this case Triphenylmethane). I read enough scientific German to convert some of it into English. Is this considered proper? I did look at the translation request pages, if it's preferred to do something more formal; but, this isn't a controversial or high interest page. Also, there is a nice table and structure in the German version. Can we just use those if they correspond to our templates? Thanks for your help. ChemGardener 01:45, 14 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Polymer chemistry stub

Thank you for showing me the {{Polymer-stub}}. I think it will be very useful. I had created a list of polymer stubs from looking at the Chemistry stubs for polymers - mainly just looking at the P entries - to see what might need worked on.

Is there a way within Wikipedia to find articles that fall into two or more categories? In this case, looking for chemistry stubs and Category:Polymers to locate "all" the potential polymer stubs. ChemGardener 19:46, 17 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi HC,

Thanks for joining the project. Can you check the entries in the chemistry list? I'd like to know that there are entries for all the important field and no entries that shouldn’t be there. Thanks, APH 08:09, 18 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't notice that you added yourself to the mathematics. Please check the entries in these lists too. APH 09:43, 18 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

Hey HC, thanks for your support on the Uriah deal. I appreciate it. But please don't give him the false impression he can keep up his promotional campaign. If you followed the saga in detail, he has very clearly shown that promoting his website is the only thing important to him and he will continue to do that unless he is given no options. Part of the problem is that I've been following him very closely ever since the problem became obvious so I curtailed it and it never got farther out of hand. For ex, after consensus was against him he started spreading discussions out over many talk pages and the only reason he stopped is I threatened to block him. He plays the innocent, 'why are you persecuting me?' game pretty well. I assumed good faith for a long time, maybe too long, but at least until he removed all doubt about his intentions. Anyway, hopefully it won't be an issue and he will see we are serious this time. But we can't let other sites exploit WP purely for their own gain as is the case here. - Taxman Talk 11:27, 18 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Receiver loud and clear!

Hey, that's a great diagram, good work. I really must get back to doing some article work; it's quite refreshing after lurking in Wikipedia: space for too long! I think that article is pretty much complete now, content-wise. I'm still loathe to do the refactoring, because I'm not really persuaded that the return (an FA) is worth the dumbing-down. But perhaps it is since the non-dumb stuff would be spun of into other articles rather than removed entirely. What do you think? -Splashtalk 00:22, 19 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The charter is here. (Relating to Esperanza)

Hello HappyCamper, the Charter for Esperanza is up. Take a looksie :) Redwolf24 (talk) 02:39, 19 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Images

Hey, I just saw your message about those img categories. I get jumpy around deleting images because I don't want to get desysopped yet over blanking the entire 'pedia or something. Anyway, do I understand right: I can speedy any image in those categories as long as they were uploaded tagged into either category at least 7 days ago? The uploader need not be notified, and I need not attempt to locate the image online to verify its copyright-or-not status? Once I've deleted an image, I should remove it from the article(s) it appeared in. Is all that exactly correct? -Splashtalk 03:02, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Esperanza made less bureaucratic

Hello again, I have (unilatterly) taken away the 'assembly' idea, as per my reasons at that edit summary and per Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Charter. I have left the admin general, as some leadership is good. Now, all you have to do is be a member to establish consensus, the whole assembly idea is gone. Also, I have added an advisory committee, of four members, with limited power besides watching over the admin general and making sure he doesn't do anything stupid. Please look at the ammended charter, and I would love a comment. Redwolf24 (talk) 00:13, 21 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the barnstar

Re: heavy metal umlaut I actually saw that book in a used bookstore, flipped through it and happened to note the mention of the umlaut. I thought it'd be great to have a reference for that article, so I bought it. Then... I couldn't for the life of me find that bit again, and then I forgot about it, and then I left the wiki for awhile, and then finally I stumbled across it again and ran straight for the umlaut page before I lost it. Thanks for the barnstar! Tuf-Kat 02:06, 21 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It's technically an edit war...

Hello HappyCamper. As you may or may not know, there have been some troubles with Esperanza. Yes, it's great to discard NPOV for one article. :) It's actually been quite exasperating, because I think the fun and punchiness has been slowly drained from the article, so the challenge is to inject some life into it. Also, not knowing when it will be frozen makes folks quite anxious.
As for word count, I pretty much copy/paste into MS Word or another program. There is also this site to cut/paste into [1]. Wish there was an easier way. -- Fuzheado | Talk 01:22, 23 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for protecting my user page. How about if you put the Ask a Question stuff first. The browsebar is usually only used by newcomers after all, so why don't we cater to them first and above all. You or I don't use it so, who does? ... The newcomers that's who, bless them ;-) . The other stuff in the browsebar is quite helpful in getting the newcomer grounded but asking a question is the first thing that they need help with. Geesh, so lets make it so idiot-proof that they kind-of just fall into it without even trying (and please don't call them newbies). Thanks for listening, --hydnjo talk 03:11, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi HappyCamper, I noticed that you protected several articles about King of the Hill. I wanted to remind you that when you protect a page you should add it here: Wikipedia:Protected page. Paul August 15:26, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, that bit's mainly my fault. I added the {{vprotected}} tags to the articles but neglected to put them on WP:PP. -Splashtalk 15:39, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I'm so happy to know there are people looking out for me :-) - actually, what happened was the following: I wanted to protect all the pages first (since I have this set up on my browser to minimize the number of keypresses), and then add the tags immediately after. Little did I expect that my internet connection would be down until now! Thanks for the kind reminders. --HappyCamper 17:18, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings, HC. Yes, there are a couple of us that are on to him -- for the record, I have never seen an edit from the 63.19 range that wasn't from this kid. And if it still doesn't work...then try the sandbox and experiment! :-) --HappyCamper 02:06, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well, what can I say except to thank you for describing it in such a way that I finally took notice (Honey, does this outfit make me look fat?). Honestly, I saw the arrows and just ignored them. I'm glad that PRueda brought it up or I'd have gone another year in blissful ignorance. :-) --hydnjo talk 04:11, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

LOL. I see now. I always saw that mysterious little arrow next to some edits, but not others, and I always figured that the arrow was added on there by the editor somehow. I always use the "edit this page" option, because I normally scan through articles, look for errors, log them in my head and when i'm done reading I edit them in bulk. Thanks for clearing this up. Add topical navigation menu(s) to every Wikipedia page

Hi HC,

Thanks for getting something going with the template:Categorybrowsebar suggestions I made. I certainly think navigation could be improved for users here, particularly new users. So, I’m here to take you up on your offer to try to help. I’ve also been pitching a “larger” site navigation proposal that seems to be falling on “deaf eyes.” :-) My proposal is to add topical navigation menu(s) to every Wikipedia page. In effect, the idea is to take the links on Categorybrowsebar and put them on every wikipage!!! My preferred option these days is the “two menu version” – put the category links across the top of each page and put the browse links in the sidebar navigation box. You can see examples at the wikilink above (resorted, per your suggestion :-). Please let me know what you think, and what’s the best way to at least get the proposal a fair hearing. Thanks. RDF talk 01:37, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I made a simpler Village pump proposal a few weeks back, but that was deleted from the archives today. Here's the latest proposal: Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)#Add Categorybrowsebar-like wikilinks to every wikipage. RDF talk 14:51, 27 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm...still not much attention...try one last thing: the technicals section of the VP. If it still doesn't work, we'll give it a try and implement it. --HappyCamper 01:18, 2 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Definitely a yawner. Considering how often the browse bars get messed with, I'm a bit surprised. What I still haven't figured out is who actually controls such things. I'll give you suggestion a go. RDF talk 03:08, 2 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your interest and support. Assuming any technical issues can be addressed. I expect the biggest "issues" will come from those who have been modifying the Main Page browse lines, Template:Categorybrowsebar and Template:Eight portals links. These browse bars are constantly changing and they would (should) become obsolete. Maybe whomever can edit those also can edit whatever needs editing for this proposed change. (That's what I was referring to in terms of "Who controls?") I still don't know exactly where these changes would be made and if the dynamics of who can change these links to the pages in question will change. I expect implementing this top-level design will force a bit more "cooperation" than has been the case for the above-mentioned browse bars. RDF talk 04:49, 2 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Seeking your opinion about User:Uriah923

Uriah923 (talk · contribs) recently started actually editing Wikipedia and doing something besides spamming links to his favorite site, but then he decided to customize his user page and fill it with links. Taxman blocked him again and removed the links, which probably isn't too bad an idea, but I'd tend to say we could let him put what he wants on his user page as long as he actually becomes a productive editor and is on good behavior. Discussing it over on Taxman's user page, we thought we'd ask you to chime in on the adminstrator noticeboard discussion with your opinion. If you know me, you know I tend to lean toward being overzealous about correcting link spam, but I'm not so sure we need to draw the line on that side of user pages. Jdavidb 22:02, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • I posted on the admin notification board conversation about me. Check it out and weigh in, if you'd like. Uriah923 04:19, 29 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

How do I count the images in the category?

I use the pywikipedia framework. Specifically, the following code:

import wikipedia, catlib
q=catlib.Category(wikipedia.Site('en'), 'Images with unknown source').articles();print len(q)

That takes about 15 minutes or so to run on my machine (and dial up connection), and outputs the number of images in the category. Then I just add it to the page. (Copied to the talk page of the category) JesseW, the juggling janitor 21:37, 27 September 2005 (UTC)

Hi HC!

First of all, I wish to thank you warmly for your confidence and support to my nomination at RfA. Every time somebody adds his/her support as you did, I'm joyed. Second, I'm intrigued as to the interpretation of the graphic you created. Statistics are not my expertise (far from it!). I'd love to hear your explanation of it. I'm all ears Hugs! Shauri Yes babe? 12:50, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'd to thank you about the graph, as well. I think it is a brilliant way of showing and promoting quality, which is based on observation and evaluation, in contrast to Durin's technical quantative graph, which cannot show quality at all.--Wiglaf 13:08, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well...there's actually quite a bit of deep math involved with that chart. It's basically a transformed version of your edit history into another representation where I can see how your editing behaviour has changed in time. Think of the chart like a microscope. The values towards the left describes Shauri's editing behaviour on small time scales, those on the right represent large time scales. See how the curve slowly gets steeper and steeper, and that there is no sharp transition? This is consistent with what she has written on her RFA - in fact, the apparent change in the editing behaviour last month ago is no anomaly at all! The typical statistical measures used to describe your editing history are thoroughly inadequate at describing the more important details in it. (Generally speaking, I have found that they are more applicable to vandals. For an extreme example, if you were to run this on a Willy on Wheels, you'd essentially get a flat line with very little detail in it.) Also, I must say, you have this amazing ability to spread kindness around here. Here's to a healthy and robust Wikipedian career! :-) --HappyCamper 16:57, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I'm intrigued. What do the axes show, specifically? Moving averages over different numbers of months or something? Why the saturation? -Splashtalk 05:05, 2 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi my dear HC! I hope you don't mind a tiny "thank you" sunflower adorning your Talk Page? Let me know if you got my mail. *Tight hugs!*, Shauri smile! 14:06, 5 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Protection

Hmm... I saw on his Gene Poole's talk page your last protection. Did he favor the last protection or not? If he didn't mind, and if he consents to a brief protection period, I would say go ahead and protect it. Otherwise, I guess we'll just have to be vigilant at RC patrol. :-) However, I do have a feeling that the IP addresses will be back whenvever the page is unprotected, so either a long-term protection or multiple IP blocks may be necessary. Thanks! Flcelloguy | A note? | Desk | WS 21:26, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I would say nay, unless he requests it. Deleting vandalism from page history isn't normally done, and I don't think this one should be an exception unless he specifically requests it. Also, how do you delete just a version of the article from the history? I never figured that one out. Thanks! Flcelloguy | A note? | Desk | WS 21:34, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I'm not sure that deleting the history of vandalism on my user page is going to be worth the effort. Also I don't see why it is necessary in any case. Wouldn't it just be easier to block the IP ranges of the vandal? --Gene_poole 12:16, 2 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I presume this is Virgin Mary in Islam. The owner of the copyright has previously granted GFDL permission. The history of the talk page attests to this. A grant under the GFDL is irrevocable — see Wikipedia:Copyrights#Contributors' rights and obligations. I previously removed the tag since it has been also listed on 24th September. I'm not sure why it also appeared on 30th, sometimes the 'bot that goes around collecting up unlisted articles gets a bit confused, I think. -Splashtalk 21:24, 8 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sure; feel free to refer people to the page. I probably need some kind of "current alert" subpage. And as time goes by I'll flesh out the procedure with more details about what I do, which anyone can replicate.

Unfortunately I'm not sure if I'd have a lot of time to write a bot right now, although if there are any existing libraries on the CPAN for automating access to MediaWiki I could probably get you started in the right direction. Word Association

I stated it on the Word Association Discussion, but I kinda Wanted you to see it. Talking about counting the words, there's what seems to be the easiest way possible that I can think of. I won't go into details, just incase this isn't what you were talking about or if you don't plainly care, but I would enjoy to tell you how to both spot duplicates (although it's takes about 3 minutes at about 400 words) and count how many words there are the easy way. If you would like to learn go ahead and contact me. Thanks. --jimmyatic 20:22, 11 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yes indeed!

That is a useful list. Check out also [2]; every single vandal is him. Before mid-June he had a 65.54.***.*** range. Many of the articles on places in north central North Carolina and adjacent areas show vandalism from him; the total must be at least several thousand edits.

And yes, the quartet would be wonderful! There's a lot of stuff we could do. The only difficulty would be getting us all in the same place at the same time ... :-) Antandrus (talk) 03:45, 12 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

That's a great idea! I've been kinda thinking of something along those lines, but unfortunately, there's not much encylopedic sounds/music thats uncopywrited. It would definately be useful for old things like Mozart symphonies, or chords, or other music things (and many I have yet to know about), but I don't know about the place of user-created works. If it becomes part of our community, I'd be happy to donate some of my works (drum samples, loops, chords, etc.). Oh of course, you are the RD person, I knew I recalled your username from somewhere. I need to re-read the RD discussion about why a bot is needed, I couldn't figure it out the first time I looked it over.
I am just running the standard meta:Solve disambiguation.py bot code, which I think RussBlau wrote, so it's not as if i have any idea about the inner working of a bot.
Good luck with your projects. --Commander Keane 17:33, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
The bot for clearing the RD is interesting. On a side note, would it be possible to force a date stamp when someone asks a question on the RD (or perhaps get a bot to sweep over the desk now and then and place a time stamp for each question). That would be helpful for the archiving bot, and useful for question answerers. --Commander Keane 17:52, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

RFA

I agree that RFA has changed, although I am unsure that discussion would do anything to change this.

In general, RFA has become more political, and a greater number of candidates are being rejected for what I see as fairly pointless reasons. There also have been a greater number of what might be considered "stealth" candidates whose fringe views were not well understood until after adminship had been granted.

Part of the problem is that the overall editor mix has changed. When I joined the project, the archetypal Wikipedian was an upperclassman in college or was perhaps in graduate school. Wikipedia appears to me to be becoming younger. In any case, the overall level of social maturity is lower than it was, though that doesn't necessarily correlate to chronological age. Since the admin population reflects the overall Wikipedian population, it is also affected by these shifts.

In general I believe that we now are at a size where it is no longer possible to make policy changes by consensus. Sometimes we have been able to make some small, very incremental changes, such as the recent expansion to CSD, but such changes are more remarkable for their rarity than anything else. Any meaningful change to RFA will require Jimbo's leadership, and that's unlikely to the be place where he'll start since he doesn't follow that process closely. There have been a number of suggestions for change at RFA itself, though most of these have been shouted down. I'm still happy to discuss, but I don't believe there is, realistically, a whole lot that can be done.

Happy Camper: I just found this on a blog I read daily, http://www.crooksandliars.com.

IMPORTANT RECRUITMENT DRIVE: Please go to http://en.wikinews.org/ and contribute to the editing and creation of news stories. Right now, conservative admins have taken over and have managed to water down even the Rove scandal through deceptive headlines and obscurity.

If enough of us get in there and make/edit articles and vote for admins... we can make wikinews worth reading again and help educate the public. A great guy to vote for admin status would be a guy named Neutralizer. http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/User...alk: Neutralizer

Neutralizer really needs our help. Keep in mind, be civil... and when conservatives like Mrmiscellanious attack you with insults.. be polite and try to get around his agendas slowly or he and others will ban you. http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/User...anious/ Opinions

Eventually, with enough of us in there we can become the admins there and change the balance of power!!! TIP: Some of us should act like we are conservatives so they will let their guard down and allow us to become admins. Then our proxy admins can vote in other admins, get it?

Getting FACTS out about our govt. is something YOU can do to TRULY help America right now. Been frustrated? This can be your outlet: Take over wikinews from the conservatives! http://en.wikinews.org/"

Turns out that althought I would like to support this Neutralizer, he isnt in the best of light.

I am not interested changing the balence of power, just establishing a balance of power. But It has pointed out the bias on wikinews, and the UTTER LACK OF BALENCE.

Now...What to do short of slapping a NPOV on the news? Thanks... (preceding unsigned comment by 67.169.172.194 (talk · contribs) 17:10, 25 October 2005 UTC)

I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures. I was rather surprised when one of them actually hatched, so I called the moth "Conzuela" and released it outside. --RichG 02:04, 28 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

unblock

Yeah actually, that may be an idea to unblock User:Wonderfool. I've got a much larger watchlist over there. Cheers mush. --Wonderfool 12:00, 29 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

While you're there, you couldn't move User talk:Newnoise back to User talk:Wonderfool could you? --Wonderfool 12:02, 29 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Speedies and long summaries

Yes, sorry bout that. I was mostly looking to get admin attention to ditch that article quickly. I'm a bit tired, so it only just now snapped into my mind how awful that must've looked on RC. Apologies. Hopefully, if my RfA goes well, I'll be able to axe it myself. Thanks for splash of cold water! --Jeffrey O. Gustafson - Shazaam! - <*> 13:27, 29 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Thanks for deleting it - ads are a growing problem. Dlyons493 Talk 02:57, 30 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Firefox extension

Would you happen to know how to make a firefox extension using Javascript? It would be very simple and used to fight vandalism. The basic idea is to feed RC diff's into firefox, and let it determine which pages contain text (such as an obscenity) listed in a file. For pages that don't contain anything on this list, the tab is closed. The others remain open and ready to be examined. If you can't figure out how to hookup the IRC RC output into firefox, then it could be used with WP:CDVF to open new tabs in firefox to be checked. I found a guide to making extensions, but it says you need to know Javascript. Thanks. — BRIAN0918 • 2005-10-30 03:51

  • See the discussion on Lupin's talk page as well. It might be possible to use the feature that allows his navigational popup to render the text of unopened pages. — BRIAN0918 • 2005-10-30 14:04

Yes please, delete Category:NLPpeople, I realised it is too vague and unencyclopaedic a title, and to be honest not needed. Thanks. FT2 15:36, 30 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
