San Francisco's urban renewal projects undertaken during the 1950s and 1960s were aimed at wholesale change in their environments. Diamond Heights, the Agency's first project, sought to use redevelopment powers to assemble land in the center of the city so it could be developed with, rather than against, the topography. With few existing residents needing to be relocated, the redevelopment program included housing for a range of incomes, churches, schools, parks, and a commercial center.
