Vartan Gregorian is a distinguished Armenian-American academic.

He was born in Iran and educated there and in Lebanon before moving to the United States. He has received the National Humanities Medal and the Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the US. He is currently serving as the president of Carnegie Corporation of New York, a position he has held since June 1997. Prior to this post, he was the president of the New York Public Library for nine years and of Brown University for a further nine. He is a member of the editorial board of the Encyclopædia Britannica.
