Proctor Valley is a region in the southeast corner of San Diego. Proctor Valley Road runs through the valley and connects Jamul to Eastlake. |

Stories of the Proctor Valley Monster date back to the early 1900s (possibly earlier) when local ranchers reported that cattle had been killed and dragged up a mountain bordering the valley. The fact that the cow carcasses had apparently been dragged seemed to preclude the predator being a coyote or cougar. The few reported sightings varied in description, with some suggesting a "dinosaur-like" creature. |
|||
After the Laguna Fire of 1970 (the largest and most destructive vegetation fire in California history until the Cedar Fire of 2003), there were several reported sightings of a Bigfoot-type creature in Proctor Valley. These were never substantiated, as several of the supposed witnesses were under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time they claim to have seen the monster. |

Around this same time, a story began circulating about a young couple being attacked by the Monster. According to one version, a teenage couple drove up Proctor Valley Road, which even today is still mostly dirt, and disappeared. San Diego County Sheriff's Deputies, so the story goes, found the car a few days later with unusual damage, strange large footprints nearby, blood everywhere, and no sign of the two teenagers. Another version of the story claims that the couple suffered a flat tire near a tree, and the young man got out to change the tire while his girlfriend remained inside with the doors locked. The young woman fell asleep, but thought she heard scratching noises on the roof of the car. This variation claims that a patrolling Sheriff's deputy found the girl in the car the following morning. She was terrified but safe, while her boyfriend was hanging upside down from the tree above the car, having been eviscerated by some beast she hadn't been able to see in the darkness. None of these stories have ever been substantiated. |

There have been a small number of supposed sightings of large man-like creatures around the town of Alpine, about 15 miles to the North. These supposed beasts have been dubbed the "Zoobies", and some have suggested the Proctor Valley Monster may be related to them. The Kumeyaay Indians of the nearby Viejas Reservation have a legend of a similar creature guarding their ancestral burial grounds. |
|||
The area of San Diego around Alpine is not forested, but is mostly covered by dense chapparal which provides cover and makes travel difficult if not on an established trail. The terrain is quite rugged, dominated by deep canyons and steep ridges and mountains, often making development very difficult. So while unlikely, it is not impossible for a rare animal to remain hidden despite the large number of residents there. |
