Jacques Guay (c. 1715 – 1787) was a French gemstone engraver.

Life

Jacques Guay was born in Marseille around 1715. Little is known about his family or early life.[1] He came to Paris at an early age and studied drawing with François Boucher.[2] He often saw the collection of engraved stones of Joseph-Antoine Crozat, and decided to study this art. He went to Florence in 1742, where he studied the antique stones in the grand duke's collection. He stayed in Rome and saw the best collections of antiques. He made an Antinoüs after a statue in the gallery of Cardinal Albani.[3]

After returning to France Jacques Guay succeeded François-Julien Barier as engraver of precious stones for the king. He was charged with making engravings in gemstones of the main events of the reign, following drawings by Edmé Bouchardon. He only completed one that represented the Battle of Fontenoy. Through the influence of Madame de Pompadour he was admitted to the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1742. He died in Paris in 1787.[3]

After Jacques Guay stopped working, Charles-Claude Flahaut de la Billaderie (1730–1809) tried to revive gemstone engraving. He promised to give the work to Romain-Vincent Jeuffroy (1749–1826), but did not keep his engagement.[4]
