The Ramacharitam is a Sanskrit epic poem written in Arya metre by Sandhyakar Nandi (c. 1084 - 1155 CE) during Pala Empire, between approximately 1050 and 1150 CE. This work simultaneously narrates the story of the Ramayana and the Pala king Ramapala, employing the poetic device of double entendre (shlesha).[1][2]

Manuscripts

A palm-leaf manuscript was discovered by Haraprasad Shastri and published in 1910; the manuscript is preserved by the Asiatic Society, Kolkata.[2] Translations in English and Bangla were published in 1939 and 1953, respectively.[2]

Authorship

Sandhyakar Nandi was the grandson of Pinaka Nandi and the son of Prajapati Nandi, the Sandhi-Vigrahika (minister of peace and war) of the Pala emperor Ramapala.[2]

Content

Though biased in favour of Ramapala, the work remains an important historical source for the Pala history.[3] The text details the historical events in Bengal from the assassination of the Pala emperor Mahipala II by Divya, a rebel Kaivarta samanta up to the reign of Madanapala in 215 verses, by employing the poetic device of double entendre in each verse.[1]
