In 2006 the channel, which had already existed for 2 years as a music channel was transformed into a socially-political channel. That time it had a reach of only 14 million people, including 1.7 million citizens of Moscow. According to the President of the channel Vasily Lavrov, "We had the aim to create an independent media resource, and we did it."[1]
The very title O2TV is derived from the chemical designation for an oxygen molecule, O2. A popular brand of the channel — "oxygenic television" draws a similarity to the Russian slang taboo adjective with the meaning of "perfect, great". [3]
