In Turkish cinemas - still owned mostly by Armenians (or Armenian converts like Selim Naşit Özcan) in the 1920-1930s - there were varieté songs and live orchestras that acted out in the film breaks. Usually very funny themes were sung. Shamram Kelleciyan (Şamram Hanım) was the most successful kanto singer of Istanbul from 1900 - 1925.
