Talk September 2007

Wachowski Move

For some reason the talk page is still at The Wachowskis instead of the new page that you moved the main article to. Konman72 18:05, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for that - I've fixed it now. There seem to be a number of issues with the moving of talk pages, as it looked liked it had moved correctly at the time. Regards, ProhibitOnions (T) 18:37, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:WeltallErdeMensch.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:WeltallErdeMensch.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Angr 19:32, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi Angr, thanks for bringing this to my attention. I think I lamely used "fair use" as a stopgap because I wanted to look up the copyright status of a photograph of the front cover of a book published by a defunct state -- and then was distracted and forgot about it. I'll take a look. ProhibitOnions (T) 20:27, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
I think it probably really is still protected by copyright. It's fairly well established on Commons that images from the Third Reich government are not PD, and I can't think of a reason why those from the DDR government would be. Although I only tagged it as lacking a rationale, I do think it fails WP:NFCC#8; an image of this book cover does not significantly increase readers' understanding of Jugendweihe. —Angr 21:00, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
It's under copyright, all right, but I was thinking more along the lines that it is a three-dimensional image of a book, rather than just the cover image (this is only due to it not fitting on my scanner). I suppose I could write an article about the book itself, though I'd think that since the book was so ubiquitous and iconic it might justify its use in the Jugendweihe article. Or it might not. ProhibitOnions (T) 21:25, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

As I said, I don't think it meets WP:NFCC#8 and have tagged it as such. Your official notice:

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:WeltallErdeMensch.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:WeltallErdeMensch.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Angr 21:45, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use Image:Warsmap.jpeg

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Warsmap.jpeg. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast 11:24, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi

Hi ProhibitOnion, can you please look at User:3meandEr conduct on the TRNC article. The article has become extremely unstable recently following his constant tagging, reverting and aggressive pov. He completely disregards previous consensus such as those on the intro and is turning the article into something very ugly. I'd appreciate your help. --A.Garnet 10:56, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

Sure thing, and I fully agree with your assessment. However, I have contributed to the article as well, so you might want to ask an uninvolved admin, or we could post this to WP:AN. Regards. ProhibitOnions (T) 12:16, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

RE: Welcome

Thank you for contacting me, and for your welcome!

I am finding the information you gave me very helpful:

  • The five pillars of Wikipedia
  • Tutorial
  • How to edit a page
  • How to write a great article
  • Manual of Style

I understand about making many changes at one time, and will try to do that from here.

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on List of rock operas (albums), by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because List of rock operas (albums) is a redirect to a non-existent page (CSD R1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting List of rock operas (albums), please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. 3meandEr

I've posted a request for a block or community ban at WP:AN/I#User:3meandEr and Northern Cyprus - your comments would be appreciated. -- ChrisO 11:13, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

Sure thing. I think everything else that could have been done has been done already, several times over. Regards, ProhibitOnions (T) 11:28, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

Duplicate images uploaded

Thanks for uploading Image:Japanese GeneralGovernmentBuildingFront.jpg. A machine-controlled robot account noticed that you also uploaded the same image under the name Image:243074675 8afb79a7ab b.jpg. The copy called Image:243074675 8afb79a7ab b.jpg has been marked for speedy deletion since it is redundant. If this sounds okay to you, there is no need for you to take any action.

This is an automated message- you have not upset or annoyed anyone, and you do not need to respond. In the future, you may save yourself some confusion if you supply a meaningful file name and refer to 'my contributions' to remind yourself exactly which name you chose (file names are case sensitive, including the extension) so that you won't lose track of your uploads. For tips on good file naming, see Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions about this notice, or feel that the deletion is inappropriate, please contact User:Staecker, who operates the robot account. Staeckerbot 10:29, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

Sting

I must take exception to your statement of "Yeah, that's about what I figured, a bit of bogus showmanship on the part of an obscure pro wrestler."

In case you have forgotten, this was on the discussion page for "Sting". There was a discussion about a professional wrestler's registered trademark for the name, and when somebody commented that there was no registered trademark, you immediately assumed this was the truth and posted the comment above.

In fact, the wrestler has legally registered the trademark - whatever user "Dhartung" says. It has the serial number 74629288 and it was filed in January 1995. (You can look it up if you wish.) Furthermore, Sting is far from "some obscure wrestler". He's had a thirty year career and is one of the most famous members of the industry. This is like calling George Harrison "some obscure musician". What frustrates me is that if the topic were about something other than professional wrestling: say, music; you would not just assume some random user has his or her facts straight and assume "some obscure" musican was exhibiting "bogus showmanship". You would stick to what you know and not chime in with ignorant comments. I do not like how easily you slip into bias simply because the subject matter is outside your interest. Even if you think professional wrestling is not a worthy profession or you have something against professional wrestlers, here at wikipedia we should treat everything with respect, without bias, and not jump to conclusions and "assume" anything because someone else says it is so. 69.215.150.227 23:59, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

No, it's because a pro wrestler is obscure compared to Sting the musician. And a possibly registered trademark doesn't make any difference as to who is more notable. That's all. ProhibitOnions (T) 07:54, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi There. I noticed Zapmail on your to-do list. I have just uploaded a short artice. Please have a look for review. Thanks Nelson50 (talk) 14:02, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

Brilliant! Thanks for rescuing this from obscurity... I was surprised it wasn't mentioned at all on Wikipedia. Your article is much bigger and better than the stub I would have probably ended up writing! I'm sure there was a Zapmail logo, perhaps we can find it and add this, too? Orphaned non-free media (Image:DivisionBellMC.JPG)

Thanks for uploading Image:DivisionBellMC.JPG. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Germany

Regarding your change and comment here: Easy, yes, but already rejected once per this diff, which is why I didn't change it back to "comprises" in the first place. We'll have to see if your "easy" change is left alone, or is merely another edit in a strange semantic battle. Up to this point, the semantic changes appear to have been in good faith, but perhaps I am wrong on that, and someone is just playing a game. - BillCJ (talk) 18:41, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

Yep, didn't mean to sound snotty -- I shoulda looked at the edit history. I'd guess it's a German with poor English who wishes to assert that the BRD now contains Germany in its entirety, as per the preamble of the Grundgesetz, but that isn't the place to explain this (if that is indeed what was meant -- I'd agree that game-playing is a strong possibility). I didn't notice that they'd already done this once before. Regards, ProhibitOnions (T) 21:57, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
