Request a coach :: Coach status

Quicklinks    (edit)

Thank you for your interest in Wikipedia's admin coaching program. Hopefully you won't have to wait too long! We're in the process of re-organizing at the moment and are starting a new system of requests.

Coaching page management

Requests are split into three sections - current requests, older or dormant requests, and matched requests.

New requests Are added to the current request list in date order, newest at the end. Coaches will contact people at or near the top of the list, to ensure older requests are attended sooner. Details of how to add a request and how to respond to one are given below.
Requests which seem inactive Either no match has been agreed despite several weeks of being posted, or because they are withdrawn by the requester, or non-responsive or withdrawn, and where there is no sign of ongoing activity or interest, are moved periodically to the "older requests" section. This may be done once or twice a month by any editor.
Requests which are successfully matched Should be moved to the status. When the coaching effectively ends, please update that page to move the coachee from the Current student to Former student column. A coachee who does not edit for thirty (30) days without informing his coach of a longterm WP:Wikibreak, will be considered retired and moved to the Former student column. This is necessary given the limited number of coachee spots available and the desire to provide as much coaching contact to active users as is reasonably possible.
Requests which are temporarily dormant For example editor is offline or on holiday, please append a note to this effect (and expected return date) so that your request is not inadvertently treated as dead or non-responsive.
Eg: 18. example (talk · contribs) Please help me. example 21:00, 1 May 2007 (UTC). Please keep alive back in 3 weeks (mid June). example 12:42, 3 May 2007.[reply]
Reactivated requests For example request was moved to older requests or was dropped, and editor now wishes to reactivate the request again, move to current requests and append a note to this effect.
Eg: 19. example (talk · contribs) Please help me. example 21:00, 1 May 2007 (UTC). Reactivated 3 June 2007, sorry, didn't see offer of coaching last time, had psychotic episode, now feeling ready again. Reactivated request. example 12:42, 17 June 2007.[reply]

Requestors: Adding a request

New requests should be entered in the following syntax to the bottom of the list:

  • #{{UserVP|USERNAME}} ''optional comment'' ~~~~

Coaches: Responding to a request

If you wish, you may contact a user at or near the top of the list. Leave a message under that person's name here, indicating you have contacted that person. If coaching commences, move that name to "matched requests" and append the details and current date, then update your status.

In general, to help others, please note if you contact a requester (by appending "Contacted - ~~~~ to the line, for example). If there is no response after some time, then note this too, and consider whether the request looks ongoing, or whether to move it to older/inactive requests.

If a requester is missing something off the basic checklist (for example, no edit summaries, or 95% of edits are of one type), then let them know on their talk page, mark the request as responded to with a note as to the comment, and move it to inactive requests for the time being.

Checklist before requesting coaching

Quick list of some "things to get right before requesting coaching" - these are basics that you should get right before seeking coaching, as they will provide useful experience:

  1. Set up an email account for yourself (via Special:Preferences)
  2. Have at least 2500 edits and/or have been referred here by another user. If you don't have enough edits, you may wish to consider User Adoption.
  3. Have been a registered user for at least four months and/or have been referred here by another user.
  4. Ensure you are regularly using edit summaries (if you sometimes forget, there's a useful setting under 'preferences' to ensure you don't overlook this!)
  5. Understand, use as appropriate, and be consistently respectful of Wikipedia's basic policies, for example neutral point of view, original research, deletion policy, copyright issues, consensus, handling of vandalism, civil (if sometimes forthright) speech, and dispute handling. (You don't need to know every detail, it's not an exam, but you'll need to have gained a pretty good sense of policy awareness.)
  6. Involve yourself with multiple 'areas' of Wikipedia, not just one narrow focus. Wikipedia is both an encyclopedia and a community. (Basic principle: 5000 anti-vandal edits and nothing else won't prove much about policy awareness, or other topics where as an admin you'll need to show competence.) You don't have to do everything, but you should aim to show some breadth of experience. Ideas for typical areas include: writing and improving articles, helping new users, involvement on community or project pages, helping with policy or projects, assisting sorting out disputes, providing opinions, adding photographs for articles, and patrolling common pages such as recent changes or AFD (including with bots, if allowed).
  7. If you have a track record of issues yourself (for example 3RR violations, or conduct RFCs), look at it, and try to put it right. (Adminship has a high standard and a demanding and searching inquiry; past problems may need considerable evidence and time with no problems to show that they are firmly and permanently in the past.)

If you aren't doing the basics above, then the first comment of any coach will probably be to advise you to get into doing so! If you already are, or you want help on this aspect as well, then ask!

Coaching requests

Current requests

New requests should be entered in the following syntax to the bottom of the Current list:

  • #{{UserVP|USERNAME}} ''optional comment'' ~~~~

Requests older than around 6 weeks without indication of current interest, may be moved to "older requests" by any editor. If you are still interested, please append to your request a note that the request is still active and the current date, and move it back to this section in date order.

Please read the basic checklist (above) first, and then if you'd benefit from coaching, add new requests to the end of this section. Older requests - we need to know if you are still interested. If you are, copy/paste --''still interested as of ~~~~~'' after your name.

If a someone has proposed a pairing, they will add " (match pending) " in front of your request while it is being confirmed.

  1. Bože pravde (talk · contribs · count · block log) Being an admin is something I considered a long time ago, but gave the idea up because I thought that I could contribute more by just writing and editing articles. Now I realize that being an admin would not prevent me from doing that, but make things easier and more helpful. 2. Valadius (talk · contribs · count · block log) I've been active for quite a long time, especially in creating/maintaining/upgrading articles regarding American politics. I have made over 3,000 edits. I wish to broaden my understanding of all that Wikipedia offers, and I think I would make a decent admin. Valadius 03:11, 4 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  3. Sjones23 (talk · contribs · count · block log) I've been active since December 2006, especially in working on Japanese seiyu. I have made many edits. 4. Vox Humana 8' (talk · contribs · count · block log) I am interested in becoming an admin eventually. I have already had some guidance from an admin through MSN Messenger, but would like proper coaching. I have been using both this account and User:Voxpuppet (the latter in a parallel second browser, as Firefox doesn't like Twinkle) to fight vandalism using the Recent Changes log and Twinkle with all add-ons and have been contributing slowly but surely. However, the Wikipedia Community is unlikely to have much faith in me, as I have in the past made myself a pain in the proverbial for some of them: I would like to put all that behind me and make myself an invaluable contributor in my own right. 5. Danielfolsom (talk · contribs · count · block log) While most of this info can be found on my userpage - I'll say some here. My biggest contributions probably come in the areas of speedy deletions (I go to the category and try and clean up what I can),minor edits to articles, vandal fighting (more-so in my earlier contribs but still some now), template space, and I'll chip in on talk pages a bit also. I think my weakest areas that I'm looking to improve are AfD voting - I used to be more involved with this but I essentially moved to different tasks, I'd like to come back to it, and dispute resolution - while I can sometimes resolve a dispute by participating in it and trying to reach compromise - I am not the best at this, and sometimes I let things go to extremes. danielfolsom 03:25, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  13. Spawn Man (talk · contribs · count · block log) - Contacted Durova, but her skills didn't match the area of admin work I was looking to learn. I okay in the Mainspace area, but I need help generally with all the admin stuff. I know most of the basics, but would like someone to go through all of it with me. I'm not looking for adminship right now (Or even for many months), but since I've learnt most of the stuff already, I'll be out your hair quickly. 16. jonny-mt (talk · contribs · count · block log) I've been a registered user for about a year and a half now, but it's only been over the past month or so that I really realized what this place is all about. I've been very active in patrolling new pages and users, both in the sense of reverting vandalism, requesting AIV and AIVU, and marking pages for speedy deletion, but also in welcoming new users and giving new stubs their first pushes towards articlehood. These experiences, as well as my own contributions to articles, have really helped me to understand the policies behind this place, and I make a point of reaching out to new editors whose potentially valid articles I have tagged as CSD to help them understand how to contribute in a manner more consistent with these policies. That being said, I would like to get more into the nitty-gritty, particularly policy creation/editing and conflict resolution before I consider standing for adminship. --jonny-mt(t)(c) 05:31, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  17. Mitchazenia (talk · contribs · count · block log) - I've been wanting to be an admin, since I've been able to prove that I can grow up and not be uncivilized. I think I am ready, although many people doubt me. My edit count since November 2, 2005 has been just over 14000. I want a good coach to help me.Mitch32contribs 00:18, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  18. Michaelbusch (talk · contribs · count · block log) I filed an RfA last week, but various editors have expressed concerns about my understanding of the speedy deletion criteria, and deletion more generally. If I read the explanations of votes properly, half the editors who have voted approve giving me Adminship, roughly 35% would perhaps be willing to give me Adminship if I demonstrated better understanding of deletion and handling vandals, and the other 15% seem opposed to me for other reasons. Therefore, I'd appreciate it if someone would be willing to monitor my anti-vandal editing over the next few months, to judge if I should apply again. Thanks.
