Bluestocking is a term, no longer in common use, for an educated, intellectual woman.
It is also the name given to a group of intellectuals who promoted the advancement of women in England in the early 1700's.
One of the leading lights of the 'bluestocking revolution', as it was known was Elizabeth Carter.
Carter was well known to her contemporaries for her successful translation of the ancient Greek philosopher Epictetus.
A painting of Elizabeth Carter, painted between 1735 and 1741 by John Fayram, was found by curators in a private collection in March 2008 after being lost to the world for over 100 years.
It held by the National Portrait Gallery and was shown at their 'Brilliant Women: 18th Century Bluestockings' in summer 2008.
