The Wonders of Nature by Josiah Priest was published in 1826. There is an original copy in the New York Public Library and was digitized 7 September 2006.[1] Some[who?] consider this a relevant work for its historical connection to Mormonism. One criticism of the origin of the Book of Mormon is the fact that this book was published five years before the Book of Mormon was initially published and the connection of the author to a close associate of Joseph Smith, Jr., Oliver Cowdery. The chapter that is of interest in regards to this subject is Northern and Western Indians, Proofs that the Indians of North America were lineally descended from the ancient Hebrews.

"Extrated from the Rev. E. Smith's View of the Hebrews, with some additional remarks," which suggests that the this may not be a primary source for the inspiration of the Book of Mormon since it is essentially a copy of View of the Hebrews.[citation needed]

Page 377 would suggest that the origins of the indians were speculated to be of Hebrew descent for at least 50 years before the writing of this book.
