The following is a proposed Wikipedia policy, guideline, or process. The proposal may still be in development, under discussion, or in the process of gathering consensus for adoption. |
This page in a nutshell: The aim of this proposal is to handle vandalism, violations of our core policies and disputes more effectively, using flagged revisions in a manner adapted to Wikipedia. |
This is a proposal to implement sighted revisions on Wikipedia. The general idea is that certain users are able to sight a revision when it is free from vandalism and respects our core policies. IPs view only the latest sighted revision of a page.
Surveyors and Established Surveyors
It is proposed that two new user groups be created:
- Surveyor, a relatively large user group of autoconfirmed users, with possibly an automatic assignment. They may sight a page when revision sighting has been enabled by an administrator for this page.
- Established surveyors, a small user subgroup of Surveyor, containing administrators. They may sight a page when sighting has been restricted to established surveyors by an administrator.
Assignment
Administrators may grant and remove these user groups.
- Surveyors are to be autoconfirmed and satisfy certain requirements defined by the community (essentially no vandalism, no recent breach of WP:BLP, etc). This right would be similar to rollback in terms of assignment, essentially left to the administrator's discretion. This can be requested at Wikipedia:requests for permission.
- Established surveyors are to be already surveyors. This may require a light process to be assigned. The requirements would be essentially: an understanding of our core policies, no tendentious editing, no recent edit wars, no recent blocks.
Enabling sighted revisions on an article
Initially, this will happen when there is a consensus on the talk page or on a noticeboard (provided the discussion is linked from the talk page) to do so. Reasons may include:
- Temporary
- article related to current events, when semi protection is insufficient
- article mentioned in a media or linked from a high traffic website, when semi protection is insufficient
- article linked from Main Page.
- Indefinite
- BLP with repeated violations
- constant vandalism, when semi-protection is insufficient
We may enable by default sighted revisions to articles with a bold link on the main page. In the future, when the group of surveyors will be vast enough, we'll have more liberty to enable sighted revisions.
Restricting sighting to established surveyors
This may occur, temporarily or indefinitely, when an article is contentious or under dispute.
