Hong Kong Provisional Legislature election, 1996 was an election that took place between the transition from the British to Chinese administration governing Hong Kong.

General Outcome

Candidates and results

Unlike elections prior and after the 1st of July 1997, the Provisional Legislative Council (PLC) was established by the Preparatory Committee of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region via a resolution by the Second Plenary Session on 24 March 1996.

Since the PLC was not a legal entity, the 60 Legco members were elected by a 400-member Selection Committee of the Government of the HKSAR on 21 December 1996. This same Committee also elected the first Chief Executive of the HKSAR.
