Coding help

I need help with my Template:ArchivedArticle. When I put it into my archived article, it looks like this. How can I get it to look right? -- IRP 16:01, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • I am unwilling to offer coding assistance until the wording of that template can be revised: at the moment, it is rather unfriendly, and seems to attempt to "ban" collaboration on the article. (Compare, Wikipedia:Ownership of articles.) I request that you adjust the tone of that template to be on par with—for example—Template:In use. Templates being used in Wikipedia's article space must, as I'm sure you can understand, be sufficiently warm and friendly.

  • Unless... That template is being used only in your user space? If so, some degree of variation in the required avoidance of going against the spirit of WP:OWN would be permissible. Where precisely do you intend to use that template? Anthøny 16:08, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I have revised the template. It is for use in my and other users' userspaces. -- IRP 16:18, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • The help that I now would appreciate is to make the background color yellow, and the border color orange. -- IRP 16:22, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Done. The background is apricot and the border is gamboge. Note, the text text is taken from {{Lorem}}, and will not display when the template is in use; it is simply for example purposes on the template's description page.
If I can provide any further assistance, simply post here with details.

  • I need help with how the template functions. I do not want it to make the whole page change color (See it here). I just want the part of the template that is currently white to be those colors. -- IRP 17:05, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ah, okay, apologies. I had misunderstood precisely what you were requesting.
    How is this?
    Anthøny 17:59, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Better, and is it OK to say archived article rather than user page? I call it an archived article, because it is an article that is supposed to be revised before being placed on the main site. -- IRP 18:03, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Perhaps "This copy of an article..." is yet better?
    Anthøny 19:17, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I asked for archived article because it is in the user's archive. A copy could be on the main site, and for somebody who isn't paying attention, may propose deletion for one of the copies. Also, can you get the clock on my userpage to be on the right side rather than the left side, on all window sizes? -- IRP 21:19, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • How come the template appears different at Template:ArchivedArticle, than it does at User:IRP/ArticleArchive/Storm_train? -- IRP 21:30, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • "This userspace copy of an article...", then?
The template is identical on both of those pages, insofar as I can see. Perhaps you are wondering why the template documentation (in the green box) at Template:ArchivedArticle is not appearing? If so, that documentation is intended to not appear on other pages, in that it is simply guidance for using the template. Does that clear things up?
    Anthøny 22:14, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • On the template page: "This archived article is in the middle of an expansion or major revamping.", and on the archived article page, "This user page or section is in the middle of an expansion or major revamping.". -- IRP 23:17, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ah, yes, that is intentional. It is the output from the usage of a ParserFunction, a system a little too complicated to concisely explain. Would you like me to have the template display only "This userspace copy of an article...", on all pages?
    Anthøny 10:58, 5 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I would like it to say in both places: "This archived article is in the middle of an expansion or major revamping." -- IRP 15:29, 5 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yes, please, on all pages, however, please delete the extra period. -- IRP 16:50, 5 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

RFM medical degree

For the record, this is a reference to Wikipedia:Requests for mediation/Medical degree. Anthøny 22:37, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hiya, I suggested MEDCOM as I am a MEDCAB member (not a disputing party in the dispute but a 3O volunteer) and am not sure it would be that useful. Would you recommend an article RFC instead or would you still recommend they try MEDCAB? Thanks! :-) fr33kman -s- 22:34, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • I would suggest filing for informal mediation at this stage, as per my rejection message.
Best of luck with resolving this, Anthøny 22:37, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I'll advise them to do that, I will have to leave the case at this point and get another mediator to do it. btw: I've never come across a vandal on a user talk page; it was very weird hitting submit and seeing the page gone: thought I had screwed up :-) fr33kman -s- 22:45, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Also, do any of the MEDCOM mediators offer mentoring? I really love DR and would love to be a MEDCOM member one day. Thanks! fr33kman -s- 22:45, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Yes, most vandals generally target only the article space. I must have done something that particularly annoyed this editor; that's probably a sign that I'm doing things correct. :-)
I have never known a Committee member to offer an editor tutoring in Mediation matters; I suppose you could select one from Wikipedia:Mediation Committee/Members or Wikipedia:Mediation Committee/Active Mediators and send them a user_talk page message, enquiring whether they are willing to drill you. Your best bet, however, to becoming a successful Mediator, is to get volumes of Mediation Cabal cases under your belt; practice truly does makes perfect. I do suggest that you are a little inexperienced to have a prospect of succeeding in a Committee nomination in the near future, but I certainly see no reason why you couldn't reach the required standards in a year or so, so long as you are still interested. If I can assist you in any Mediation matter whilst you are "training up," for want of a better phrase, then by all means do drop me a line.
    Anthøny 22:52, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your advice. Yes, I am far too inexperienced for Wikipedia! (Although I do ADR in real life for a living). I was actually thinking in terms of 12-18 months and not any time soon. :-) Thanks for offering your help in mediation matters, I'm sure I'll be talking to you! (btw: I've got a proposal about mediator school going on 3O and MEDCAB if you'd care to take a look.) Cheers! fr33kman -s- 23:14, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A novel but interesting proposal! Anthøny 23:27, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
