El Guarco (canton)

El Guarco is the name of the eighth canton in the province of Cartago in Costa Rica. The canton covers an area of 167.69 km²[1], and has a population of 36,291[2]. The capital city of the canton is El Tejar.

El Guarco is an elongated canton that stretches southeast from its capital city to encompass a swatch of the Cordillera de Talamanca (Talamanca Mountain Range). The Carretera Interamericana (Pan-American Highway) delineates the canton's lengthy southwestern border.

The canton of El Guarco is subdivided into 4 distritos (districts).

  1. El Tejar
  2. San Isidro
  3. Tobosí
  4. Patio de Agua

History=

The canton was established by a decree of July 26, 1939.
