Main Page error reports

To report an error you have noticed on the current Main Page or tomorrow's Main Page please add it to the appropriate section below. Errors can be fixed faster when a correction is offered, so please be specific. You can do this by pressing the [edit] button to the right of the appropriate section's heading. Also, please sign your post using four tildes (~~~~)

Note that the current date and time are in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which may not coincide with your local time zone. The next day's featured article of the day, picture of the day, and anniversaries update at midnight (00:00) according to UTC. The current time is 18:09 on June 4, 2024 (UTC). (Update)

Once an error has been fixed, the error report will be removed from this page; please check the page's history to verify that the error has been rectified and for any other comments the administrator may have made. Lengthy discussions should not take place here, and should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere.

References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error, and a suggested rewording is helpful with a stylistic complaint. The main page usually defers to supporting pages when there is disagreement, so it is best to achieve consensus and make any necessary changes there first.

Errors in In the news

The phrase "2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry" is a link, implying that there is a page about this year's chemistry prize. However it actually links to Nobel Prize in Chemistry, which is a generic page.

If there is a page about this year's chemistry prize then it should link there. If not then ITN s/b changed so that "2008" is not part of the link. FerdinandFrog (talk) 11:27, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have just seen that the Physics & Literature entries are also formatted the same way ("2008 Nobel Prize in X" links to "Nobel Prize in X"), so maybe this is a deliberate style choice but if so I think it is misleading. Especially so as for Chemistry & Physics this link is the main (bold) one. FerdinandFrog (talk) 11:35, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It is sometimes displayed in this manner - I think you're right in that it could mislead, but it's not wrong, it's just perhaps not the best way it could be linked. It's not always done that way - see, for example, J. M. Coetzee. I've changed this one. I also changed the bolding, as the top entry had emboldened the winner's name, and the bottom entry had emboldened the award's name. Not consistent! Fixed fish&karate 15:42, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that. I agree that it is not wrong in the sense that "2+2=5" is wrong but as it is (or at least could be) misleading and a better alternative is readily available I would say that it should be avoided.
Also I checked the articles of the seven recipients listed on ITN and six of them do not include the "2008" in the link, Roger Y. Tsien being the exception.
Some say "Nobel Prize for X in 2008" so it is not an issue
. As the Main Page is supposed to defer to the subject pages I think what you have changed it to is right in some sense of the word..

Errors in Did you know?

"The Great Escape" is not a novel, but an autobiographical account of an actual event, and given that it tells the story of the efforts of many men to escape from a POW camp, I sincerely doubt that a single man inspired it.

I've removed the claim. --BorgQueen (talk) 13:39, 10 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
