Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia is more or less exclusively a fear associated with the Western Christian world. It originates in the belief that the Bible indicates that the 666 (number) is linked to Satan or the Anti-Christ. Some former Christians have the phobia due to childhood experiences or general obsessive-compulsive tendencies. Among non-Christians it may occur due to obsessive-compulsive disorder and possibly association with various horror films. pp

Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobics tend to avoid anything related to the number 666 in any way, such as a building in which the number is prominently displayed. Rarer is trying to avoid the number as it relates to other numbers. For example, the fraction two-thirds has a repeating decimal of .666. A severe hexakosioihexekontahexaphobic may avoid this as well as 5/3, 8/3, 11/3, etc.

It is important to note this largely originates from poorly educated or folk religion Christians. The majority of Christian intellectuals and mainstream theologians believe the number was simply a reference to a Caesar who persecuted Christians. The Caesar generally deemed to fit that role is Domitian, although some prefer the more well-known, but less likely, choice of Nero. Either way these thinkers state that either Caesar favored that number for reasons related to Numerology or it is a code to reference his name. Despite Christian hostility to numerology, a triple six could symbolize a trinity of unfaithfulness, bitterness, and vengeance in numerological systems, although it could as easily symbolize harmony, beauty, and charm in numerology.

In many liberal Protestant sects they simply avoid discussion of The Book of Revelation at all.
