melanogaster literally means (black-bellied). It is part of the scientific name for the following organisms:
- The false truffle genus, Melanogaster (fungus)
- Acheilognathus melanogaster, a cyprinid fish indigenous to Japan
- Anhinga melanogaster, the oriental darter (a Southeast Asian water bird)
- Boa constrictor melanogaster, the Ecuadorian boa constrictor
- Drosophila melanogaster, the common fruitfly
- Poecilia melanogaster, the black-bellied limia (a fresh-water fish endemic to Jamaica)
