Kerner Optical is a visual effects house that was originally part of George Lucas' Industrial Light and Magic(ILM). The company is located at ILM's previous location off Kerner Boulevard in San Rafael, Ca. It primarily deals in physical and model effects. The company was founded in 2006, when ILM was being relocated to the San Francisco Presidio. Due to Lucas' desire to increase ILM's focus on digital effects, longtime employees of ILM responsible for miniature effects, and physical effects such as pyrotechnics, split off from ILM and formed Kerner as their own effects house.
Kerner Optical contributes significant physical effects shots to many major Hollywood films. Some of its more recent projects include Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Terminator: Salvation, and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (film).
It is also the name of the building that ILM was housed in on Skywalker Ranch. A sign reading "Kerner Optical" was placed in front of the building in order to mislead people who may have been searching for ILM.
