The Republic YF-96 Thunderstreak was a development of the Republic F-84 Thunderjet utilizing swept-wing data recovered from German wartime flight testing. Powered by a 5200 lbst. XJ35-A-25 engine, the prototype YF-84F-RE, serial 49-2430, was ordered as the YF-96A-RE with swept-back wings and tailplane mated to an F-84E fuselage to enhance the Thunderstreak's performance but was redesignated YF-84F-RE before completion. Two additional prototypes were built as YF-84F-RE, serials 51-1344/1345, with a redesigned canopy and an Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire turbojet, the first with an elliptical nose intake and the second with wingroot intakes. All subsequent development models were built under the F-84 Thunderstreak identity.
