Ed Niehaus was a pioneer in the movement to commercialize the Internet.

Along with partners Bill Ryan and Melody Haller, Niehaus founded Niehaus Ryan Haller (NHR) which was the dominant public relations firm in the Internet industry during the rapid growth period of the 1990s.

NHR provided PR services to O'Reilly & Associates' experimental web publishing project Global Net Navigator and was the company Yahoo! chose to handle its public image during the period from 1994 to 2000. In the late 1990s, Steve Jobs approached Niehaus to assist him with his efforts to turn around Apple Computers; NRH became Apple's agency of record.

Niehaus was also active in the formation of the Foresight Nanotech Institute founded in 1986 and the first organization to provide education to the public about the benefits and risks of nanotechnology.
