James Alexander Holden (April 1835 – ) was a mechanical engineer who founded the South Australian company which eventually produced the Holden automobile.

James Alexander Holden was born in Walsall, Staffordshire and emigrated to America, then after a few years, to Adelaide, South Australia, arriving in 1854.

He set up business as coachbuilder, saddlemaker and ironmonger. He took on a partner and for many years traded as Holden and Frost. He retired eary due to ill-health, handing on his share of the business to his son Henry James Holden.

He was one of the founders of the Chamber of Manufactures.

Henry Holden

Henry James Holden (18 July 1859 – ) was born in Kensington, South Australia. He married Mary Anne Wheewall in 1881. His business flourished.

He was councillor and mayor of Norwood for three years.

He was father of Edward Wheewall Holden.
