The Ernies were a ska band of the late 1990s. The band's music was a blend of ska-rock and humorous lyrics, often dealing with the subjects of life and philosophy. Although never establishing a mainstream following, the band did receive a small cult following after the release of their second album, Meson Ray.

History

The Ernies was formed by three students of Virginia Commonwealth University: Will Hummel, Matt Goves, and Hayes Smith. Hayes majored in music education (where he learned to play the saxaphone and bassoon) and Matt in music performance (percussion). Will studied English, and was especially influenced by the Modernists of the early 20th century.
