Sumith Liyanage was a Sri Lankan senior police officer. A former Deputy Inspector-General of Police DIG.

Early life and education

Sumith had his primary education at Ananda College Colombo and then joined Nalanda College Colombo.

Sumith was an out standing sportsman representing Nalanda. He won the stubbs shield for boxing in 1956 and 1957 for Nalanda. In 1957, he won the Feather Weight Title and represented Ceylon in the South East Asian Championship. He was a fine opening bowler and a hard hitting batsman for college first XI team from 1956 to 1958. He was a marksman too.

Sumith Liyanage represented Sri Lanka in 1960 Rome Olympics in Boxing, was one time Vice President of the Boxing Association of Sri Lanka and also served as Manager of the Sri Lanka Boxing Team. He was also the head coach of the famous Sri Lanka , YMCA and SL schools middle weight boxing champion Indrajit Perera.
