Lieutenant Commander Jadzia Dax (2341-2374), played by Terry Farrell, was a fictional character in the television series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. She was a regular from the first episode of the show, but left at the end of the sixth season.

Overview

Template:Spoiler Jadzia Dax was a joined Trill. After completing her training at Starfleet Academy, Jadzia returned to Trill where she applied to the Trill Symbiosis Commission for joining. She was the only Trill in history to successfully complete the program after having failed once. Her re-application was sponsored by Curzon Dax, and when she completed the program, she was given his Dax symbiont after his death.

She served as science officer aboard the space station Deep Space Nine under Commander Benjamin Sisko, who had been a close friend of Curzon. Her first rank at this post was that of Lieutenant. Initially very reserved, she soon acquired a very adventurous reputation, with a special interest in Klingon culture. She once disobeyed Sisko's orders by fulfilling a blood oath to Kor, a Klingon captain whom Curzon Dax had known, to help him kill a personal enemy.

On one occasion, the Dax symbiont was removed from Jadzia by force, under the demands of a rogue Trill named Verad, who was unjoined. He believed the Trill Symbiosis Commission had unfairly denied him the right to be joined. Once Dax was joined to him, he briefly became Verad Dax, until he was apprehended. Dax was eventually rejoined with Jadzia.

Jadzia was also threatened with the removal of Dax on another occasion, when her mind nearly collapsed due to repressed memories of Joran, a previous Dax host who was psychotic and a murderer.

At one point, Jadzia faced ostracism from Trill society when she began a relationship with Trill scientist Lenara Kahn. Torias Dax and Nilani Kahn, earlier hosts of both symbionts, had been husband and wife in the past. It was considered a "taboo" for Jadzia and Lenara to be involved in a romantic relationship, not because they were both female, but because they were reassociating into a relationship belonging to their symbionts' previous hosts. Jadzia and Lenara eventually broke off the relationship rather than face the taboo.

Although she was romanced both by Dr. Julian Bashir and Quark, she fell in love with Lieutenant Commander Worf after he transferred to DS9. She and Worf married in a ceremony held at Quark's bar, whereon she became a member of the Klingon House of Martok.

Jadzia died during the Dominion War due to injuries sustained in an attack by Gul Dukat, who was possessed by a Pah Wraith and attempted to destroy one of the Orbs of the Prophets (Orb of Prophecy). Just before her death, Jadzia had responded favorably to treatments that would have allowed her and Worf to have a child together. Upon her death, an agonizing Worf screamed out a Klingon wail of sorrow for his beloved. Before Jadzia's funeral service, Sisko was alone in the room with the coffin. Heartbroken, he told Jadzia that, while Curzon had been his mentor, she was his friend.

While being returned to Trill, the Dax symbiont nearly died too. The emergency forced its implantation into Ezri Tigan, who was not prepared for joining. "Ezri Dax" later transferred to DS9, to the surprise of everyone.

Earlier, in an alternate timeline seen in the episode "The Visitor", Jadzia lived on, and continued to serve as a Starfleet officer for several decades. She assisted the adult Jake Sisko in a failed attempt to rescue his father, who had become trapped throughout Jake's lifetime, in a strange dimensional void. Jake's later success in saving his father eliminated this timeline, but in the process set in motion events which led to Jadzia's untimely death.
