Mimulus guttatus is a yellow bee-pollinated wildflower that grows along the banks of streams and seeps in Western North America. Both annual and perennial forms occur throughout the species range. This species is found in a wide range of habitat including the spash zone of the Pacific Ocean, the geysers of Yellowstone NP, alpine meadows, serpentine barrens, and even on the toxic tailings of copper mines. In addition, 'Mimulus guttatus' has been a model organism for studies of evolution and ecology. There may be as many as 1000 scientific papers that are focused on this species.
The Joint Genome Project (DOE) will release the whole genome sequence of'Mimulus guttatus' in 2007.
