In Buddhist context, a samanera (male) or samaneri (female) (also spelled shramanera and shramaneri) is a novice monk who is devoted to a religious life and has vowed to uphold the ten precepts. After a year or at the age of 20, he or she will be considered for the higher Bhikkhu or Bhikkhuni ordination.

Etymology:
