Images and media for deletion (IfD) is for listing images which are unneeded.

I. For speedy deletion candidates, use {{db|reason}}. See the criteria for speedy deletion. These are: duplicates (where both images are on Wikipedia), thumbnails, broken images, non-existent images, non-commercial, and "by permission" images. Additionally, no source, unknown copyright, unused fairuse, and fairuse without rationale images can be deleted after a week without being noted here. Use:

  1. {{subst:nsd}} if an image has no source indicated
  2. {{subst:nld}} if an image has a source but no licensing information
  3. {{subst:orfud}} if an image has a fair use tag but isn't used in any articles
  4. {{subst:frn}} if an image has a fair use tag but no fair use rationale and was uploaded after May 4 2006

II. For a redundant or duplicate image, please use {{isd|Full name of image excluding the "Image:" prefix}} for speedy deletion.

  • Remember that the other image must be on Wikipedia, not on Commons, for this to be used. If the other image is on Commons, use {{NowCommons|image name on Commons}} or {{NCT}} (for images with the same name on Commons) instead.

III. For copyright infringements, use Wikipedia:Copyright problems.
IV. For other licensing issues, use Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images.

Images that have been listed for more than 5 days are eligible for deletion if either a consensus to do so has been reached or no objections to deletion have been raised.

Recovering deleted images: Image undeletion is now working. Currently undeletion requests should be brought to deletion review.

Listing images and media for deletion

If an image is a candidate for speedy deletion, please do not list it here. This includes images with no source or licensing information, and unused fairuse images.

To list an image:

  1. Add {{ifd}} to the image page. (If the image is in use, also add {{ifdc|{{subst:CURRENTMONTHNAME}}_{{subst:CURRENTDAY}}}} or {{ifdc|Image:Image name.ext}} to the caption(s))
  2. Follow this edit link and list the image at the bottom of that page. If it has been replaced by another image, also list that image, in the format " Image1.jpg - obsoleted by Image2.jpg". You can use {{subst:Ifd2|Image.ext|Uploader= |Reason= }} ~~~~
  3. Inform the uploader by adding a message to their talk page. You can use {{subst:idw|Image:Image name.ext}} (replace "Image name.ext" with the name of the image or media).

State the reasons why the image should be deleted. Some common abbreviations are:

  • AB or AU (absentee uploader) - The uploader has not contributed to Wikipedia in a long time, and is probably unavailable to answer questions.
  • CV (copyright violation) - The image might be used in violation of copyright.
  • LQ (low quality) - The image is of an extremely low resolution, distorted, or has other physical image quality concerns.
  • OB (obsolete) - The image has been replaced by a better version. Indicate the new image name.
  • OR (orphan) - The image is not used on any pages in Wikipedia. (If the image is only available under "fair use", please use {{subst:orfud}} instead.) Please note: in this context, OR does not refer to original research
  • UE (unencyclopedic) - The image doesn't seem likely to be useful in this encyclopedia.

Since these abbreviations will not be familiar to most Wikipedians, especially newbies, please consider using full words. A few extra keystrokes now can save paragraphs of explanation to a panicked uploader wondering what's wrong with their image.

If you remove an image from an article, list the article from which you removed it so there can be community review of whether the image should be deleted. This is necessary because image pages do not remember the articles the images used to be used on (see talk page).
