In early June 2008, Kardinal released the Limited Time Only mixtape, which features six songs that will appear on the album. One of those songs, "Burnt", featuring Lindo P, was accompanied by a street video on June 30. On July 15, "Burnt" and "Set It Off", featuring Clipse, were released by iTunes; the latter is the album's second official single. The song "Numba 1 (Tide Is High)", featuring Rihanna, is a cover of the reggae song "The Tide Is High".

Kardinal originally got the idea for the album title from a custom-made T-shirt. The T-shirt read "Not 4 Sale", and had a bar code on it. Kardinal stated why he chose Not 4 Sale as the title:

The Toronto-based rapper's album features established artists such as Clipse, Rihanna, Akon, T-Pain, Estelle, and The-Dream. The website IAmNot4Sale.com was used to promote the album.
