Welcome

I'm surprised to see that nobody has welcomed you! Welcome! It's amazing that you are already making incredible contribution, such as the US$/Euro map. I just have three questions.

By the way, what software do you use to create these maps? I might one day do this myself too. --ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib) 11:27, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey ChoChoPK, thanks for your welcome message! :-) About the map:
1. Surinamese dollar: not pegged to anything, at least none of the articles on Wikipedia says so, and exchange rates listed on the website of Surinam's Central Bank suggest it floats freely against all currencies.
2. Kosovo uses the Euro, but I don't know yet how to carve out a border and fill Kosovo with color on the map. I'm using Inkscape [1], which is apparently the free software of choice for SVG images on Wikipedia. I used a blank map template I found on Commons.
3. You're of course right about Saint Pierre et Miquelon, an oversight. I'll try to correct that soon.
--Targeman 14:43, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hehe, don't worry about where to answer. People have different practices. Some people choose to answer on the same page where it started. Some choose to repond on the other person's talk page. Some choose to copy, like we are doing now. Often times, people put up a banner at the top of the talk page to state their practices. I also include your map on some other relevant pages. Cheer. --ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib) 14:54, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Saint Lucia

Saint is said in full, with the long 'a' typical of midwestern English. I hear "Lucia" said with the same sound as Columbian Spanish makes in "gracias" ... not quite a "sh", closer to "sy". I wish I knew IPA better. It's a two syllable word, first syllable the American "loose", second syllable "ya", with a schwa for the vowel in "ya".

Thanks! That was fast :-) I'll insert that in a sec. If you want to learn more about IPA, you can read IPA_chart_for_English, although transcriptions I see around here are far from consistent. I'll raise the issue of standardizing them on Wikipedia when I find out whom to address :-) --Targeman 21:45, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, the Lucia Saint Lucia is correctly pronounced "Loo-shya". Unfortunately I am not able to copy and paste the correct IPA character. Please could you make the necessary change. Many thanks! --Vivenot 10:46, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot for making the correction! --Vivenot 13:57, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Palau Airport

Airport coordinates are always referred to the geographic center of the runways. For PTRO/ROR it would be the center of the lone runway. Are you sure you want to use the terminal? HkCaGu 06:47, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I wasn't aware about the coordinates being always centered on the runway. Thanks for the info, I've undone my edit... However, where do you center coordinates for airports with multiple runways? --Targeman 09:57, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Image:DOLLAR AND EURO IN THE WORLD.svg, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Image:DOLLAR AND EURO IN THE WORLD.svg fits the criteria for speedy deletion for the following reason:

obsolete because of inaccurate data; replaced by [Image:USD and EUR in the world corrected.svg]

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Image:DOLLAR AND EURO IN THE WORLD.svg, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Please note, this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion, it did not nominate Image:DOLLAR AND EURO IN THE WORLD.svg itself. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot. --Android Mouse Bot 2 21:45, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I saw your new map. I like the new colors better. Allow me to give you some tips that will make your life easier in the future. Both the old and the new maps were already on commons. So the images are also visible on the English Wikipedia (en:) under the same file name. Normally, the image description page on en: would be blank. In this case, the image description displayed is from commons. You requested deletion on the old image, but you happened to do so on en:, not on commons. So the result is that you created another image description page on en:, which only has the deletion request. I deleted the image description on en:. But the old image still exists on commons. I'm not an admin on commons, so the most I can do for you is to tag it, which I will do in a few minutes.
The easiest way to do what you intended to do in the first place is to upload the new map under the same file name. This way, you don't even need to update the articles, and the history of the file is preserved.
A question regarding the content of the new map. IMHO, the Danish krone, the Cypriot pound, and the Slovak koruna are not pegged to the euro. They still float in a narrow band. I also believe the same for the Surinamese dollar.
Cheers. --ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib) 06:03, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Actually on second thought, I downloaded the new image, and reloaded under the old name. --ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib) 06:22, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, thanks for your suggestions re deletion, I realized all that too late, will pay attention next time. I'm still a newb here and the complexity of Wikipedia procedures is bewildering. :-)
As for the currencies you mention, yes they float within a narrow margin. So I would call them "loosely pegged" for lack of a better term. This could actually be discussed somewhere, we could vote on what to consider pegged or not... Now that I have a better grasp of the software, I could modify the map reasonably fast. Cheers --Targeman 07:40, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If we include loosely pegged, I fear that it may open up a can of worms. That means we also have to include Hong Kong dollar, Kuwaiti dinar, and possibly more. Central banks may have a unpublished policy to loosely peg against the USD or the euro. In addition, some peg to a basket of major currencies, which is even more problematic when making the map. I'm starting to use inkscape and I do enjoying it. One question, how do you change the color of a shape that was previously grouped, without ungrouping the shape first? --ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib) 22:10, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It is certainly a topic to discuss at that page talk's, if you disagree with me. I based my argument on 1) personal experience - being a Pole, I have heard of PŻM, but not of its new name 2) Polish Wikipedia which doesn't even mention the new name and 3) English website of PŻM-Polstrea, which mentions both names. It appears to me that the old name is still more popular - but I am open to counterarguments. Anyway, thanks for the article! -- Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus | talk  15:10, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dinner Reservations

I know many royals that insist on filling out their own paperwork. In fact, my cousin Pyinsama Singhaya-nasin Sri Pawara Vijaya Nanda Jatha Maha Dharma Rajadhiraja Pagan Min Thaya Gyi Murphy works for Walmart as a greeter. You really should see his name tag. the_undertow talk 01:27, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Heritage aircraft

Actually for Eurowhite and some of the other articles that are see also in this article might be better included in a Aircraft livery article. I think having the bits and pieces that concern livery in one place may actually result in a good sized article. If one aspect grows to a point that it is too large, then it could be split back out. Filomena Hanas

The newspaper link seems to be real ... but even if she is real, she's well wide of the notability mark. What seems bogus about that newspaper? Blueboy96 19:11, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I asked on the AfD for this article: "Are User:Zd123as, User:83.27.31.131, and User:Russian Pop connected in any way, or is it just a coincidence?" Bearian 02:42, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

AfD

Hey, I moved the proposal to talk, so that people would know where to comment and such. I believe this is the more general practice... we can move it back, but I'm afraid it is making kind of a mess, where people were voting down in the proposal section, etc. Mackan79 15:58, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

N/p. Hope it helped. Thanks, Mackan79 16:08, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Gedefr 15:46, 21 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A Note

Hey Targeman:

Sorry you got frustrated. I like Wikipedia a lot myself, but it’s very far from perfect. I edit a fair amount in political areas, and sometimes have to take a break and edit other things. There are many Wikipedians, however, who won’t touch Middle Eastern/Jewish/Muslim/Christian articles with a ten foot pole. There’s just too much posturing and politicizing and name-calling. I have finally come to the idea of embracing this struggle, in the hopes that a synthesis will emerge thereby. I find it happens on some articles, partisans on both sides whack away at each other until finally the result resembles something pretty close to an encyclopedia entry.

Anyway, a cool head with an ability to maintain editing neutrality, which you seem to have, will be sorely missed. Happy editing elsewhere, and hopefully I’ll see you around (if you’ll pardon my use of the word “hopefully” where I perhaps ought to have written “it is to be hoped”). Please change this vote

Please change this vote. There are a lot of people who would find that offensive. --Deskana (talk) 19:04, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That's some nice wikilawyering. WP:NOT applies to articles, not to people's comments. I asked you to withdraw it because it was unnecessarily confrontational. That you refused says a lot about you. --Deskana (talk) 22:13, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
