Location of the town and municipality of Boavita in Boyacá Department.

Boavita is a village municipality located in the north east side of Boyacá Department, in Colombia. It was founded in 1613, when Mr. Hugarte built a Catholic chapel in a place called Patiño, which eventually would be moved to its current location, due to water shortage and topological difficulties in the field, to name a few.

The village was settled round a main "plaza" in the middle of which lay a pool of water surrounded by many settlements. Some houses have disappeared due to fires or in other demolished to widen the main "plaza".

In 1633 Boavita was compounded by the pathfields of Boavita, La Uvita and San Mateo.

Prouding history: Previous times to Spaniard conquest existed a small indigenous village which name in chibchab's idiom means according to knowers and to other savants "Edge of the Sun".

This very village was approach located in the same place in which nowadays was built the Agricultive Institute and was dwelt by Guavita or Boavita tribu(this is where the name of the village comes from)whose people was under the commands of the warrior "Cacique Soatá", who analogally was under the commands of the mighty "Cacique Tundama". Boavita is indigenous original population obeying the commits commanded by the powerful "Cacique Soatá".

Boavitan population is about 16000 dwelling throughout the urban and rural area.

Rural area is compounded by 13 "Veredas": San Francisco, Cachavita, Sacachova, Chulavita, Chorrera, Río de Arriba, Río de Abajo, San Isidro, Ochaca, Cabuyal, Cácota, Melonal y Lagunillas.

As urban area is compounded by 33 sectorizes: Cualata, Tobaría, Rodeo, San Francisco Centro, Tunal, Sogamoso, Mangos, Sabilal, Méjico, La Puerta, Cabrerita, Guamito, Santo Domingo, Patiño, Cabrera, Ovejera, Manzanal, Llanitos, Esmeralda, Estrella, Espigón, Ospina Pérez, Palmas, Las Minas y Sausal.
