From the plant family Araceae, Carlephyton has three species at present (2008) These are C.diegonse, C. glaucophyllum, C.madagascariense.

Carlephyton is a seasonally dormant tuber. Depressed-globose. Its leaves are cordate with a sub-marginal collective vein. The fine venation is reticulate. There are usually 1-3 leaves. Petiole sheath is short.

The inflorescence is typical or all Aroids with a spathe and spadix. It has no sterile appendix and its flowers are unisexual. Usually 1-3. the spathe is not constricted and the lower part is persistent in anthesis.

The berries tend to be orange-red.

They are known to grow in tropical deciduous forest on limestone or basalt or in rock crevices.

Carlephyton diegonse

This species is different to the other because its male and female zones on the spadix are directly superimposed, there are no bisexual flowers and the top of the spadix is made of sterile male flowers. The lead is pale green and shortly decurrent on the petiole. It likes a pH of 5.4-5.8 and can be found growing with Colletogyne perrieri and C. diegoense

Carlephyton glaucophyllum

This species is different because it has some bisexual flowers present concurrent to the female flowers. It has a short appendix and the leaf is glaucous. Alt 150-200 m, Flowering in December. Grows in Clusters. Berries possibly yellowish.

Carlephyton madagascariense

This species is different in that it has some bisexual flowers inbetween the male and female zones of the spadix. The apex of the Spadix can be either sterile or not. Grows in clusters.
