His childhood included watching lots of football. He earned his teaching degree at Montana State University where he majored in political science and minored in musical arts. He is known to frequent the Safeway Deli, whose regular customers usually exceed the half century mark. His wife, Jean Dennehy, is speculated to have done much "behind the scenes" work for his Butte High teaching position, apparently writing notes and making up most of his tests.
