Buses in Shanghai

Shanghai has more than 1000 formal bus lines (include downtown and suburb line), and about 20 bus company(Bashi,Dazhong,Guanzhong and Qiangsheng are the famous and biggest 4 in these).

Naming Principle

Downtown bus are named with digital, while suburb bus and few downtown bus are named with text.

Digital Line

• Line number under 200 are conventional bus(常规线). In these bus, line under 30(except which start with '0') is trolleybus(except 18,21), but there maybe air-conditioned bus in trolley bus line.
• Line number between 200 and 299 most is rush-hour bus, while some of them are conventional bus now.
• Line number between 300 and 399 is night bus.
• Line number between 400 and 499 is cross-river bus. Though there's many other cross-river bus do not have a line number start with '4'.
• Line number between 500 and 599 is special-line bus(专线车).
• Line number between 600 and 699 is special-line bus in Pudong.
• Line number between 700 and 799 is suburb conventional line.(Most 7XX bus at least have one termianl out of Outter Ring Road(A20 Road).
• Line number between 800 and 899 is special-line bus. Most of them are middle bus, but now the middle bus will change to air-conditioned large bus.
• Line number between 900 and 999 is special-line bus.Most of them are full line air-conditioned.

Text Line

• Tunnel Line

Tunnel Line 1 to 9(except Tunnel Line 5) is cross the tunnel under Huangpu River. As the same as 4XX bus,there's many other bus cross tunnel which not named as tunnel line.

• Bridge Line

Bridge Line 1 to 6 is cross the bridge over Huangpu River. As the same as 4XX bus,there's many other bus cross bridge which not named as bridge line.

• Airport Line

Airport Line 1 to 7(8 coming soon) is connect Pudong Airport to downtown, while Airport Special Line(机场专线) connect Hongqiao Airport to downtown.

• Other Line

There will be various name principle in text line. Most line are named as "XY Line",while X and Y indicate the two termianl of this line. e.g. "莘纪线"(Xin Ji Line) is a bus which run between Xinzhuang and Jiwang.

Some other line only indicated one termianl.e.g."宝杨码头专线"(Baoyang Port Special Line) is a bus run between Baoyang Port and Shanghai Railway Station.

In the central town of some suburb, there will be "XX No.X" line, for example "Songjiang No.1","Anting No.1"

Fare

• No.01 Line ordinary bus has two price 1 yuan and 1.8yuan, while air-conditioned is 2yuan.
• Other line number under 400 and between 700 and 799 ,and tunnel line, bridge line is ordinary bus 1yuan(not more than 13km) or 1.5(over 13km) ,air-conditioned 2yuan.
• three-digit Line number start with 5,6,8,9 is use mutil-level price start from 1yuan.
• Text line some use single price(单一票价), while some use mutil-level price.

Card

All single price and digital line can use "Shanghai Public Transportation Card, while most multi-level line can use it, too.
